About The Churchill Tree
The Churchill Tree is a pub in Macclesfield, set in the Grade II listed Tenants' Hall at Alderley Park, a building that once served as a wartime hospital. The tree Winston Churchill planted stands outside. The pub hosts weddings and events, and the grounds are used for photos. The kitchen serves a classic pub menu of sandwiches, burgers and fries, and deep fried fish. Sunday lunch brings roast pork with a large Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes and vegetables. A lunch deal and a Social Club menu run alongside. The bar pours cask ales, craft beers and spirits, and the grand hall has fires for cooler days. Well-behaved dogs are welcome in the bar area, so walkers coming in from the parkland can bring them along.

Customer Review Summary
Complaints are specific. One group found service much too slow even when it was not busy, and two had to leave before dessert. A regular was refused a breakfast order placed shortly before the advertised cutoff on a Sunday, because the kitchen was prepping lunch. Another reviewer found a goat cheese salad was cream cheese with chives and beetroot, and it was deducted from the bill. A separate reviewer describes a few regulars behaving intimidatingly, which led one family to leave.

“What a lovely experience! The staff were warm, friendly, and wonderfully inclusive. The food was delicious, and the lunch deal was excellent value for money. We had a fantastic time and would definitely recommend it!”

“This pub has everything it needs to be one of the best around. The staff are friendly, the drinks are good, and the venue itself is excellent. Unfortunately, it’s let down by the behaviour of three local regulars who seem to think they own the place. On one occasion, they tried to provoke me into a confrontation for no reason whatsoever. Thankfully i showed maturity towards this group of adolescent attempting to fight infront of children running around. I ignored them, but it completely changed the atmosphere and made what should have been an enjoyable visit uncomfortable and that won’t change for me now for every visit I go in the future. Even more disappointing was seeing what appeared to be a single father with his three children made to feel so unwelcome by the same group that he ended up leaving. Watching a family feel uncomfortable because of the actions of a handful of regulars is not something any pub should want associated with its reputation. It’s a real shame because this isn’t a criticism of the pub itself—it’s a criticism of the fact that the behaviour of a very small number of customers seems to go unchecked. A welcoming pub shouldn’t feel intimidating to new customers or families. I genuinely hope management addresses this issue because the pub has so much potential. Remove the influence of these few individuals, and it would easily deserve five stars.”

“Terrible experience, particularly as a regular. We’ve always known breakfast served until 11am on sundays. Have been coming since Neil ran it impeccably. Unfortunately now it’s not well run. The kitchen runs the place clearly. Our son went ahead of the family to check if still serving breakfast. Was told yes by the young girl there and proceeded to order a couple of omelettes some toast and coffee at 10.50am. We arrived dot on 1-am to be told they hadn’t placed his order as they couldn’t possibly ask the kitchen to cook breakfast at this time. They were prepping lunch apparently. Well.. who’s running the show? The chef ? Or the manager? If you advertise online and your staff tell people breakfast is served til 11am then it should be served til 11! Not just stop when the staff can’t be bothered. We won’t come again for breakfast. This isn’t the first time we’ve witnessed bad attitudes here but it is the first I’ve reported it.”

“Lovely location. Most of us went for the Social Club menu, which is great value. Food was good, waitress was very nice but service much too slow (again!) - and it wasn't over busy either. We had checked whether we needed to pre order and were told it wasn't necessary. Two of our group had to leave before the desert was served.”

“We choose the pub for its proximity to nice walks in the woods and based on recommendations. It is a lovely place to meet and have a drink, and the team is very welcoming. We enjoyed our time there for these reasons and Benson took great care of our table. We were extremly disapointed with the food. A goat cheese salad ended up being creme cheese with chives served with beetroot, no salad and no nice goat cheese to cut through (it was a creme and cheese mix). We couldn't find a nice healthy dish to choose from on the menu. Benson tried his best to mix ingredients and build a menu to our liking but it was still disapointing. We were hoping and expecting a nice lunch menu such as salads (as it has been in the past) and nice breads to go with it. It is now a classic pub menu, mainly sandwich, burgers and fries or deep fried fish. The goat cheese salade was kindly deducted from our bill. We do hope the menu will change in the future and offer a nicer variety of dishes with some tasty vegan or vegetarian options. In the meantime we will come back but stick to drinks only.”
