  “Amazingly high quality and great value set menu. The 3 courses for £24 was a steal. Great drinks too and happy hour cocktails were ace. Service from ‘B’ was brilliant and just the right level of attentive. Loved it. Will be back.”

  “I was very excited by the recommendations of a friend to try this place out during lunch. I ordered the chateaubriand cut, medium rare. It comes in a sharing portion so it’s 650g for 2 person. Steak feels badly overcooked, which was unfortunate considering it cost £113 for the meal. Ambience is cosy and service is attentive.”

  “Would give 0 stars if I could 2/05 Asked the lady at the entrance (middle aged Caucasian lady) to ask if they do hot drinks, (we intended to have appetisers too, and it was raining outside) to which she looked at my buggy and (with a disgusted face) said yes but sorry have you got a reservation? She refused entry without a reservation and we asked whether we could walk in seeing as the place was empty (a few tables at best!). She says no, has a very rude attitude and says sorry we have 2 large groups coming in soon. Considering the place was practically empty this seemed like a poor excuse to not let us in as two groups would still mean plenty of empty spaces in the place. Judging by the overall attitude, lack of helpfulness to accommodate and the clear excuse used this spot seems like a place to avoid. Being open and honest to ‘not accepting drinks only’ or not accepting families would have at least been honest. Appalled as I have not come across anything like this before in London. Have attached photos for reference of the empty places.”

  “We came here for a bite to eat before catching a show at the nearby theatre. We had a lovely time! The staff were attentive without being invasive, the food was delicious and the atmosphere was excellent. Music was at an optimal level - loud enough to be heard but not so loud that we couldn't hear each other talking. There was one little hiccup whereby one of the dishes came with a sauce that wasnt specified on the menu, so we had to send it back, but the staff took it without argument, apologised for the error and acknowledged that the menu should fully reflect the dish. They were friendly and didnt push back or try to place blame with us at all. I highly recommend the the scallop starter - it was phenomenal! Steak was cooked to the correct temperature and the mac and cheese was lovely. Portion size was great and the prices are reasonable. Asparagus Martini cocktail was pleasantly unusual! Would definitely recommend and will return when I'm next in the area.”

  “Pretty pricey but amazing, steak cooked perfectly. BYOB Mondays which few people seemed to be aware of (you pay a corkage but still way cheaper than buying wine at a restaurant). Best peppercorn sauce ever! It was an anniversary meal and the staff were very lovely, we got free fizz & a little dessert.”

  “It's been a couple of years since we were last at the Coal Shed. On previous visits I always had the grilled seafood platter which has sadly disappeared from the menu. Dinner was good but flavours not quite as clean and bright as I remembered. Perhaps that was because this time we skipped starters and only had mains this visit. My companion loved his medium rare burger, where both the burger and the bun was redolent with charcoal. It came with excellent fries. I wasn't expecting to like them as much as did because they were rather pale in colour. However, exterior was crisp and crunchy and interior flaky and yielding. Well seasoned with a slightly sweet scented aftertaste which made me wonder if they had been fried in coconut oil. I chose the cheapest steak, the rump cap ,as i figured this is a restaurant who must know how to deal with less tender but flavourful cuts of beef. I was not wrong. Soft and smokey, and served with good bernaise. Very welll trimmed with no sinew and the fat cap removed. My sides were a mixed bag. Padron peppers were dependably good and served with a wedge of lime as well as a sprinkle of coarse salt. The big disappointment was the gratin of celeriac, leek and potato. Stodgy, mushy, and no subtly of flavour--just a heavy hand with cheese. The house red was a reasonable £35 a bottle, served slightly cool, which we both found pleasant.”

  “We really enjoyed our Valentine’s lunch. The staff were warm and inviting and gave us a nice experience. Fantastic tuna and scallops to start, then cod and steak for main. The cod was a little overcooked but the curried mussel sauce it came with was incredible and more than made up for it! Also excellent chips. Lemon meringue tart for dessert which could have been more lemony and the pastry base was quite chewy but the raspberry and white chocolate were nice additional elements.”
