About Swiss Butter - Holborn
Swiss Butter - Holborn is a steak house on Southampton Row in London that keeps its menu to three mains: beef as a filet or ribeye, chicken breast and salmon filet. Each main comes smothered in the house butter sauce and is served with a mesclun salad, a freshly baked baguette and chili flakes. Diners choose fries or a baked potato on the side. For dessert, the kitchen makes a molten chocolate fondant and a pain perdu. A full service bar operates at the restaurant, and the wine selection includes a house wine.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often come for the steak, naming the ribeye, the fillet and a Tomahawk, with several calling them juicy, tender and full of flavour. Close behind are the sauce, the crispy fries and the generous portion for the price, and a few single out the salmon as really nice. The molten chocolate cake splits opinion: one calls it the star, while others find it floury, too big for one person and short on rich chocolate. Queues are a recurring complaint, with reviewers describing long waits outside. Several report steaks arriving more done than requested, one nearer well done and another closer to rare. A few found the bread hard, and one says the salmon was smaller than expected. One recent diner describes a birthday visit where no bar drinks were taken and the dessert ice cream arrived completely melted. Others praise attentive, welcoming staff and a manager handling the queue. One reviewer asked for brown bread and received white.

“Was so good the first time, we had to have it twice. The menu was so affordable and the quality of the food was not what I had expected. It was so good, I’m glad the management kept it at those prices. We came back an hour half before closing and there was still a long line. Luckily, the service was quick and other guests did not take a long time to leave. Overall, a really pleasant experience!”

“Would definitely recommend a visit. Great food and service, very attentive and welcoming staff who made the experience great. Deserts were also incredible! Only slight downside was some tables and the areas for 2 people can feel a little crowded or squashed. But not enough of an issue not to visit! (update 20th July 2026) Service has gone downhill terribly here. Such a bad experience this Saturday for my daughters birthday. Given a table at the bar while waiting for table, no drinks orders taken while at bar. When ordering desserts we asked for one each, to be told not needed because two come with icecream anyways. Then they arrived and ice cream was completely melted all over as pictures show. They genuinely couldn't care anymore, main meal is tasty but won't be going back anymore. Far better steaks available in London with immensely better staff.”

“had a very disappointing experience at this restaurant. While eating my meal, I found what appeared to be an insect in the salad, which completely ruined my appetite. This is a serious hygiene issue and made me question the cleanliness of the kitchen and food preparation. I informed the staff, but I expected much better standards. I hope the restaurant improves its food safety and quality control so this doesn’t happen to anyone else.”

“3.75/5 This one didn’t quite live up to the tiktok hype for me. The sauce was okay but I asked for my ribeye steak medium and it was more like rare, I was so hungry I started eating it before I realised. The portion size for the price was fantastic, very filling. I did find the bread a bit hard, after a while my teeth started to hurt from all the chewing. The fries on the other hand was perfectly crispy. The molten chocolate cake was the let down. It was big, but too big to be enjoyably eaten by one person. There was way too much molten chocolate to the outer cake ratio, leaving a sickly puddle on the plate. I would’ve loved a bigger scoop of ice scream to balance it out. It also tasted like cheap sugary chocolate, not the rich dark chocolate you’d expect from a molten cake. Our server was lovely though and generally the service was prompt and efficient.”

“Visited swiss butter late on a tuesday evening and was surprised to see the place was a little busy. We were asked to wait for around 7-8 min outside before being shown to a table. The energy about the place was quite lively although the staff looked like they had had a long day, keeping interactions to a bare minimum. I went for the fillet steak and salmon as an added protien on the side. I requested the steak medium but it came out nearer well done than medium - note to self: order a little less done than requested as it continues to cook in the hot plate it is served in along with the butter toast. Fried were nice and fresh and salad was also pretty fresh. The bread however seemed to have been pre sliced and toasted and was almost on the verge of going hard. But for £19.99 in Holborn, I dont think i could complain. The salmon was a smaller portion than expected but was pretty ok, albeit a little over cooked again. For dessert we went for their molten chocolate cake which wasnt as rich as I expected - but this was a good thing. The ocean cream cut through the rich chocolateyness well. All in all a decent meal, nothing to blow you out of the water. Im glad I visited. Im not sure if id be in a hurry to return.”

“Swiss Butter is a casual steakhouse that serves 3 mains: Beef filet or Ribeye, Chicken breast & Salmon filet smothered in our secret Swiss Butter sauce. All 3 mains are served with a mesclun salad, a freshly baked baguette, chili flakes and your choice of fries or a baked potato. We also serve a molten chocolate fondant and a pain perdu for dessert. We serve a selection of wines but highly recommend our house wine which is young yet superbly balanced. A full service bar is also available at the restaurant.”
