About Island

Island is a surf-and-turf seafood restaurant in London, on the first floor of George and Dragon Clerkenwell and separate from the restaurant downstairs. Two Michelin-starred chefs run the kitchen, working with British meat, wild fish and seasonal ingredients, so the menu covers both land and sea. The island mixed grill and the flat iron steak with crab sauce sit alongside a sharing roast for two. The roast comes with roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and gravy, and the choice of main includes beef, catch of the day, roast chicken or porchetta. Tables are bookable through FirstTable. A private dining room is set up for groups.

Customer Review Summary

Sunday roast draws the most praise, especially the roast potatoes, called gold, crispy and the best roasties reviewers have had in a restaurant. Diners also single out the tender beef rump and cheek, the porchetta with its cracking, the catch of the day and the gravy. Close behind are the oysters, squid and nduja bread, skewers, and a flat iron steak with crab sauce, while the chocolate cake and soft serve come up often for dessert. Opinions on the mixed grill differ. One found the version for two thin, with a single portion of each meat, though others called it substantial and good value. Another thought the chocolate cake slightly dry, and one found the beef gravy too rich and marrowy. A wagyu and lobster lasagna disappointed, and an early mixed grill arrived cold. Staff handled a forgotten pint well, and a manager's outreach after a disappointing first visit led to a return where the roast portions were excellent.

“Second time’s the charm: First visit to Island I was disappointed by the portion sizes, see initial review below. However, the operations manager got in touch and genuinely wanted to improve on our previous visit - so we decided to give Isand another try. We visited for the Sunday lunch menu. We got the beef and catch of the day roasts and happy to report that the portion sizes were excellent and good value for money. We never had any issues with the taste of food or service, which remained on point. Island handled the disappointment following our first visit with true class and that alone deserves a shout out. However, the taste of the food speaks for itself and the service provided has always been 10/10. I would definitely return again! First visit: The positives: excellent service, the staff were really a highlight. The food was tasty no fault there. Negative: Value for money - the mixed grill (pictured) priced at £45 per person came with essentially 1 portion of each meat, which is a bit misleading as even their instagram page shows at least two portions of each item on the mixed grill. I even questioned the waitress whether there should be more considering it’s a £90 platter. I appreciate restaurants are struggling but customers who show support shouldn’t feel cheated by spending their hard earned money. Such meagre portions for £90 felt unacceptable. I do recommend but if you’re a party of two steer clear of the mixed grill.”

“Absolutely excellent Sunday roast! Really generous portions so come hungry. The oysters were unreal and the soft serve yum yum. We had the catch of the day, roast chicken and porchetta. Great trimmings. Just an overall excellent warm and delightful delicious experience. Kudos to the chefs and service team.”

“Amazing Sunday Roast . We had the sharing roast for 2 . It’s more than enough food for 3 people . The roast potatoes are like nothing you have ever had before , gold , crispy and so well seasoned. The Beef Rump and Cheek were tender and bursting with flavour . The Porcetta was perfectly cooked and had the best cracking I’ve ever had in a restaurant. The chicken is based in a herb sauce . The sauce and the chicken were so fresh and tender. Enormous Yorkshire puddings were so crispy , cauliflower was creamy and the carrots were tender and perfectly grilled and then the gravy/Jus . The gravy is so good I drank it like a shooter after my meal . It’s is incredibly good. We had an instant where I ordered a pint of lager and never received it . This was really handled well and i give props to the staff for making it right. I can only give this restaurant the highest possible score . My opinion: BEST Sunday Roast in London .”

“Food was good overall and everything was cooked well. Beef tartare with prawn crackers was a revelation and I still think about it often. Went during opening so some things were still being ironed out like the mixed grill was cold when it arrived however I’d imagine that’s not a problem now.”

“I had a few hours to kill before heading back to Spain. As I now live abroad one of the things I miss about the UK is a good Sunday Roast. So I did some research around the KingsX area and this seemed well thought of. The service staff were great and very attentive. I settled for the roast beef and waiting with a glass of Diet Coke. Let’s get straight to it … the food. The beef was good, but nothing stunning but the whole plate just didn’t ‘hit’. I finally decided what the issue was … the gravy was just too rich and ‘marrowy’ (hope that makes sense). So in general, it was ‘ok’ but I’ve had far better in London without the high-end prices (see bill). A regrettable choice.”
