About Fat Crab

Fat Crab is a seafood restaurant at 59 Lavender Hill in London, founded in 2014 to bring Sri Lankan home food flavours to seafood boils. The boils come in a bag, and no plates are provided. Diners choose a main such as snow crab or lobster, and sides like corn, squid and prawns go into the bag with it. The Cajun flavour comes with selectable heat levels, hot or medium, and the Whole shebang sauce is on offer too. Lemon pepper fries and chips are served as a shared side, and the kitchen fries snacks including baby rice crabs and oysters. Reservations are taken.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers come for the seafood boil served in a bag, with the snow crab, lobster and whole shebang sauce in medium heat named most often, and the Cajun flavour in hot also earns praise for staying flavourful. Close behind, diners single out the lemon pepper fries as a refreshing side, the fried oysters in cornmeal, and the scallops. Several describe the staff as friendly and kind, with one server arranging a birthday cupcake even though none are on the menu. The complaints are specific. One reviewer found the snow crab served as very thin legs despite being billed as the meatiest, and another called the bag format less practical than a tray. One diner with a dairy intolerance found every sauce cream-based and was told cutlery was impossible for shelled prawns. Another objected that the Wednesday prawn deal applied only to dine-in orders, and a starter never arrived without explanation. A few mention saltiness or missing table water. One reviewer notes the staff had flagged that a smaller brown crab meant a lower price.

“I’ll start by saying that dining at Fat Crab is definitely billed as "an experience" – but for me, it was one I won’t be repeating, and I can’t in good conscience recommend it to anyone who prefers eating with plates and cutlery, or who has dietary needs like lactose intolerance. Let’s address the positives first: the shellfish is fresh – you can tell that much from the texture and smell of the prawns and mussels when they arrive. But that’s where the good points end for me. As someone who can’t have dairy, I was disappointed to learn there are absolutely no sauces available that cater to lactose intolerance – everything on offer is cream-based, so the food came out pretty bland with no way to add any flavor or moisture. What really threw me off was the approach to dining basics. When I realized they weren’t bringing any plates at all, I politely asked if I could at least have some cutlery. The staff looked at me like I was from another planet, and then made a rather rude comment saying it was "impossible" to use cutlery for shelled king prawns and mussels. Even if they don’t typically use utensils to eat their own food, there’s no need to make customers feel awkward or judge their preferences – that kind of comment is unnecessary and comes across as dismissive. But what’s truly unforgivable is that the prawns weren’t properly cleaned – their intestines were still intact and visible. I understand their concept is serving food in bags, and I can even overlook that they haven’t thought through non-dairy seasoning options, but dirty shellfish is a basic food preparation issue that simply shouldn’t happen in any restaurant. It’s not just unappetizing – it raises serious questions about attention to detail and food safety standards. I gave the place a chance to live up to the hype and tried the "experience" once. But between the lack of dietary options, the rude response to reasonable requests, and most importantly, improperly prepared seafood, I won’t be going back. If you’re someone who likes to eat off plates, use cutlery, or expects shellfish to be properly cleaned and seasoned to suit different needs, this isn’t the spot for you.”

“My family came to this restaurant today at 8pm on Christmas Eve. They told me that only customers who had a reservation were allowed to dine in, and walk-in customers could only get takeaway. Fine, no problem. However, when I asked about the offer written on their board — buy 1 lb of prawns, get 1 lb free on Wednesdays — they told me that this deal was only for dine-in customers, not for takeaway. What kind of logic is that? What’s the difference? Dine-in customers already get full service, while takeaway customers don’t get any service at all — so why deny the deal to takeaway? Or is it because I’m Asian and they thought they could treat me unfairly? I paid nearly £9 and only got 5 prawns, while people dining in were getting 2 lbs of prawns for £23 (buy one get one free). And don’t even get me started on the lobster they sold me for £37 — it looks no different from the £9.99 lobster you can buy at Lidl. Very disappointing experience. Totally unfair and misleading.”

“We booked this for New Year's Eve 2025. The scallops were the best I've ever had. A really friendly place, with great seafood. Highly recommended.”

“Deep fried Baby rice crabs / sawagani at Fat Crab. Normally you get one or two with Japanese omakase but here you can order them as snacks. Basically crunchy and prickly to eat and lots of chewing but high in calcium and chitosan. The fried oysters were delicious because they were strong and coated in this delicate cornmeal. This place specialises in seafood boils but I've already tried elswhere so just had snacks. Overall it was good but wasn't offered table water when the people opposite had it.”

“The Fat Crab was founded in 2014 with the idea of bringing the flavours and nostalgia of Sri Lankan home food to the masses. It was an adventure to create the smell of the sea, warmth of the sandy beaches, exotic spices and the warmth of the people to the table. The idea was to bring friends, families and seafood lovers to enjoy the riches of the sea in the simplest way possible. At The Fat Crab, it is all about enjoying seafood in an unpretentious way, surrounded by your loved ones and friends. The Fat Crab, is about people getting together over great seafood, drinks, music and getting messy and chatty. We source the best local seafood, delivered everyday to ensure the freshness and the highest quality.”
