About Simpson's in the Strand

Simpson's in the Strand is a European restaurant at 100 Strand in London, run by Jeremy King Restaurants. Its main dining room is the Grand Divan, with high ceilings, mahogany walls and leather-bound booths. Roast beef and Beef Wellington are carved at the table from a trolley there, and the roast beef arrives with Yorkshire pudding and roast vegetables. Oysters are on the starter list. The cooking follows an old-school British approach. The building is old, and a door man staffs the entrance. Besides the Grand Divan, the house holds Romano's, Simpson's Bar, Nellie's Tavern and The Assembly Room. Lunch and dinner require reservations.

Customer Review Summary

Roast beef carved from the trolley is the dish diners raise most, described as buttery soft, served medium rare, and in one case called the best roast beef in London. A pork shank with mint sauce and a Beef Wellington carved at the table also earn praise. Close behind are the scallop and oyster starters, with smoked eel and horseradish, Scotch eggs with coronation mayonnaise and a railroad mutton curry singled out as well. Reviewers describe the main room, with its high ceilings, mahogany walls and leather booths, as beautiful, and the service as very good. The complaints are specific. One diner found the cod main dry and overcooked, and said a request phoned in ahead to acknowledge a 50th birthday went unmet. Another noted that no bread reached the table and wanted more with the smoked mackerel pâté, while one called the crème brûlée standard. A wedding party describes a chocolate plate arriving with congratulations written on it for the newlyweds.

“Quintessential English fine dining. Old, antique building with a door man. Good was good. Fish was very tender. Beef was carved tableside on the trolley and served with Yorkshire pudding and veggies. Crème brûlée was standard. I forget the British term for it. Pricey meal.”

“My english friend recommended this place as his favourite childhood memory. He said his grandmother used to take him here when he was young ( he's mid 50s now.) So whilst we're visiting London, we didn't hesitate to visit. I have to order the ten deadly sins that has everything including kidney and black pudding. The food was excellent. We also had coffee and freshly squeeze juice. It's like stepping into a different time when you walk into this restaurant. We didn't have any reservations, we phoned prior coming here however lunch and dinner will require reservations. We asked and they are fully booked for dinner. I highly recommend this place 👌”

“We had a lovely meal at this resturant. We were seated at a corner table in the Grand Divan dining room. The food and service was very professional. We had roast beef from the trolley and railroad mutton curry. The curry was mild but very tasty. It had a lot of high quality lamb pieces that were cooked exactly right for a curry. The roast beef was served medium rare and the chef told us it had been feed on grass and herbs, hung for 30 daus and cooked for 14 hours. We will definetly go again in the future.”

“An unforgettable wedding lunch at Simpson’s in the Strand. We visited as a party of six to celebrate a very special wedding, and the entire experience was exceptional from beginning to end. I started with the smoked eel and horseradish. The eel reminded me slightly of mackerel, while the horseradish complemented it beautifully and lifted the whole dish. Several people at our table chose the Scotch eggs with coronation mayonnaise, which were very generous portions and went down extremely well. The braised celery hearts were also highly praised, although I did not try them myself. Other starters included the heritage courgettes with tomato tart and the smoked mackerel pâté. The pâté was delicious, although a little more bread would have been appreciated. We also noticed that no bread was brought to the table, which would have been a lovely addition, although the portions were so generous that perhaps it was not really needed. Our wonderful waitress, Antonetta, recommended the market fish of the day, which was monkfish. Two members of our party ordered it and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was beautifully presented and received the most compliments at the table. Unfortunately, I did not manage to get a photograph of it. For my main course, I had the Veal and Crayfish Marengo. The portion was very generous, and the combination of the rich stew with rice worked beautifully. I would happily order it again, although next time I may be tempted by the monkfish. By the time we finished our mains, most of us were far too full for dessert, but a few people were tempted by the sticky toffee pudding, English strawberry tart and chocolate éclairs. A lovely chocolate plate arrived with “Congratulations” written on it for the newlyweds, which was such a thoughtful and unexpected touch. The service throughout was impeccable. Antonetta was warm, attentive and genuinely wonderful. This was fine dining without unnecessary fuss or pretence. Then, to our surprise, Jeremy King himself approached our table to say hello. What a treat and such a memorable part of an already special afternoon. After lunch, we were moved to the bar, which I highly recommend for continuing with drinks and carrying on the celebration. It was the perfect ending to a truly wonderful occasion. A genuine 11/10 experience. Fabulous food, generous portions, impeccable service and an atmosphere that made a very special day feel even more memorable. I will absolutely be back.”

“immaculate experience, just had the best roasts I've had in London, the prime rib live carving came with fresh meat along with a side of ribs complimentary which was a nice bonus for the family, had a cabernet sauvignon which was immaculate that was recommended by the staff, the roast veggies were grey. grey the potatoes like the roasted potatoes are hard but soft and the inside as they usually are. the match with hails are immaculate. fish was fresh, the pork shank was a favourite by my family with the mint sauce. it was quite like a ribeye, and the Yorkshire pudding was the best one. I've had crispy and flaky and so amazing and the interior was grand and beautiful and wonderful stuff and I just had an amazing experience”
