About Shishawi

Shishawi is an Egyptian restaurant at 51-53 Edgware Rd in London, serving Egyptian and Mediterranean dishes since 1992. Meats are grilled over an open charcoal flame, and the chicken shawarma comes both as a platter and as a wrap. The platters are sized for sharing, with each one feeding about seven people, which suits groups. Shisha is a main draw, and the drinks list covers karak tea, other teas and Arabic coffee. Cheese kunafa is among the desserts. The kitchen also serves late-night meals for those arriving after a night out.

Customer Review Summary

The complaints centre on desserts and value. One reviewer found the um Ali dry, oily and overcooked, and the cheese kunafa too sweet to taste the cheese. Another ordered Egyptian knafeh for delivery and received bite-sized balls, and the manager insisted that was the correct item. A lamb shank drew a complaint about something in it that the staff said was a bone, and two reviewers call the place pricier than expected, with one describing the interior as tired.

“Huge and impressive inside even if it looks tired. The food was basic but did a job, not amazing but fine. Not a place I’d go back to but it’s ok for lunch. But pricier than I’d expect.”
  • Owen Thomson
“I came into as shop to purchase pomegranate juice, and the girl there recommended that I should eat in the restaurant next door "Shishawi". I came in and was greeted by the very friendly staff and given a seat. There is an incredible selection of vegetarian foods and very reasonably priced too. My order of lentil soup, grilled haloumi, falafel and chips arrived promptly. Im not sure if I can eat it all, but I'm going to give it a red hot crack. This food is amazing.”

“Horrible experience, not somewhere to go with your family. Bunch of weirdoes in there. Ordered a lamb shank and found something in it that does not look like a bone. And when I brought it forward they said it’s a bone. Horrible customer service. Expensive for the quality as well.”

“It’s my first time here. We ordered sahlep, cheese kunafa, um Ali, tea with mint and Arabic coffee. Tea and coffee were fine but the dessert wasn’t good at all. Um Ali was dry, too oily and overcooked with very light sugar. Kunafa was too sweet to a degree that you can’t taste the cheese which was also overcooked. And lastly the sehlep wasn’t better, light sugar with honey on the top which has changed its actual taste. But to be fair, the place looks nice with good atmosphere.”
  • Laura Mikeladze
“Ordered Egyptian Knafeh based on the Uber menu photo but received bite-sized balls that looked more like baklava than traditional Knafeh. The manager of the Restorant insisted this was the correct item, despite it looking completely different from what was advertised. If you’re serving Knafeh bites, please label them as such and update the photos to avoid misleading customers.”
