About Pearl Liang

Pearl Liang is a Chinese restaurant in London, at 8 Sheldon Square, with a pink dining room and a blossom mural that runs the full length of the room. Dim sum is the specialty, and a dim sum menu runs alongside the à la carte list, with a separate weekday dim sum menu. The dumplings include wasabi prawn dumplings, and the à la carte side includes stir-fried lobster noodles, which can be portioned at the table. The kitchen also cooks sea bass as both rolls and main dishes. Tea comes as Iron Buddha, brewed several times over.

Customer Review Summary

Duck draws the most praise at this Cantonese restaurant near Paddington, with reviewers singling out the Peking duck, the roast duck and the Cantonese-style roasted duck for crispy skin, though one found the signature crispy aromatic duck dry, almost like tree bark. Dim sum comes close behind, notably the seabass rolls, steamed prawn dumplings, wasabi prawn dumplings and fried carrot cake, while the stir-fried lobster noodles and beef in black bean sauce also earn praise. Service is repeatedly called attentive and friendly, though one reviewer notes slowness when busy. The complaints concern value: one says set menu portions of duck, fish and prawns were small for six adults, and another says the baby squid came deep-fried rather than roasted, with oily rice, no eggs and an automatic service charge. Several say reservations are needed, especially at weekends. One reviewer notes the lobster noodles were offered portioned at the table.

“Just arrived in London after a long red eye flight. Roast duck was excellent. Skin was crispy which added to the texture. The roast pork was on the lean side, but still very good. Dim sum dishes included steamed pork ribs, pork dumplings and BBQ buns. All very good. Service was excellent. We were there at 3pm and the place was full. I can only imagine the wait if you don't make a reservation ahead of time. Great start to our London trip!”

“Pearl Liang – Deceptive, greasy, and a complete rip-off I ordered the baby squid with spicy roasted pepper for £10.50. What I got was nothing like the menu described. First: "roasted" turned out to be deep-fried. Greasy. Heavy. Not roasted at all. Second: the dish was supposed to come with eggs in the rice. No eggs. Just oily rice. Nothing else. Third: they kept asking me if I wanted rice. Multiple times. Like it was a favour. But rice was not included in the price. So they were basically trying to upsell me on something that should have been part of the dish. Fourth: I didn't order any drinks. They asked me several times anyway. For a bill that would have been £17 or £21 – not the £10.50 I expected. And then: 12.5% service charge. Yes, it's written on a card somewhere. But that doesn't make it right. It's sneaky. It's automatic. And for this quality? A joke. So what did I actually get? · Deep-fried squid (not roasted) · Oily rice without eggs · Endless pressure to order more · A service charge for nothing What I did not get: · What was promised on the menu · A fair price · Any respect as a customer This is not a restaurant. This is a trap. #PearlLiang #LondonEats #FalseMenu #DeepFriedNotRoasted #ServiceChargeRipOff #NoEggs #UpsellPressure #NeverAgain”

“One of the better quality Chinese restaurants in London. Dim Sum is very decent as is most of the menu. Service can be slow during busy times however they are friendly and efficient.”

“We have been dining at Pearl Liang for over 15 years. The restaurant has managed to retain many of the staff over the years. Xiao Fen and Ah Yee have always been very welcoming and provided good recommendations on dishes and also got the kitchen to cater to our dietary restrictions. The servers are also very attentive and friendly. Our favourite dish is the stir-fried lobster noodles. The lobster is fresh and tender and the noodles are cooked al dente with a tasty broth. The restaurant also has a wide selection of dim sum. The steamed prawn dumplings are yummy. The skin is delicate and the prawns are fresh and juicy. The restaurant has a weekday dim sum menu and it is a good introduction to a selection of dim sum. The wasabi prawn dumpling and fried carrot cake are some of our favourite dim sum. It is best to eat the dim sum when it is hot. Reservations are a must during the weekends as it can be very busy.”

“I am a tourist from Canada, and my friend who lives in London took me to Pearl Liang. It’s a decent place for a business lunch or a family gathering for dinner. The food overall was great, except for the signature crispy aromatic duck—it was a bit too dry, almost like eating tree bark and the dessert was just okay as well. That said, the service was excellent, very attentive and professional 👍. Overall, still a pleasant dining experience.”
