About Royal China (Baker Street)

Royal China is a Chinese restaurant in London, at 24-26 Baker St, serving dim sum and Hong Kong Chinese dishes. The kitchen makes its fried and steamed dim sum to order, and the menu includes soup dumplings and a dim sum platter. Peking duck is also ordered, and hot Chinese tea comes alongside meals. Dim sum service ends in the afternoon, so it suits a lunch or early visit. Saturday lunch is walk-in only, with bookings taken only for dinner, and a queue forms before opening on Saturdays. Customer Review Summary

Roast and Peking duck draw the most praise, with diners calling the roast duck juicy and tender and the Peking duck delicious, though one found the crispy duck only ok and the char siew ok. Close behind is the dim sum, described as delicious, made to order and hot, with soup dumplings and a dim sum platter singled out, and egg tofu pork meat stew also earning a mention. Beef and chicken dishes are called really good. Service splits. Several find it prompt and efficient, and one says a busy Saturday night walk-in was seated straight away. Others report slowness, including a wrong order that had to be fixed and a long gap between a starter and the next dishes, where a server reportedly called it the British way, with no goodbye as the family left. One reviewer was unhappy that dim sum stops in the late afternoon without that being stated anywhere, and another found the rice dumpling in lotus leaf had very little meat and that ordering by hand felt messy. One diner in the corner found it stuffy during a heatwave, with a fan blowing on the table.

“Royal china franchise is go to for Cantonese food. This was my first time at the Baker Street location. It was incredibly busy when I went and service was a little slow. When my food arrived I received the wrong order then had to wait for it to be fixed but despite all this the food was tasty and fresh. The dim sum was delicious. I found prices really great for everything that we had (much better than their Canary Wharf branch) I will definitely recommend & return.”

“I have come to Royal China several times now but I have to say that today was the worst experience I had… The past few times I visited I noticed that the food quality has dropped significantly but today even the service was horrible. The food took over 20 min to get to the table and after finishing the starter it took additional 10 min for food to arrive again and this was only after asking… The server said that this was the British way? It was a special occasion and my family and I left quite disappointed with the lack of service and food quality. When left the servers didn’t even say goodbye and did not acknowledge the customer leaving. It wasn’t even crowded I mean come on… I would definitely not be returning any time soon. I’m not sure about what happened to the restaurant but compared to my visits previously it was a disappointing experience. I hope the service and food quality improves. Note to manager: Please teach servers to be friendly and at least acknowledge the customers?”

“Dim sum restaurant that doesn’t mention anywhere that they stop serving dim sum at 430pm. (Apparently commonly known) unfortunately not to me. Staff told me if I’m not happy I can leave (fair) Food was above average for the price. Beef and chicken dishes were really good. Dim sum platter (only option for dim sum) was great. Would recommend the soup dumplings for 23£. The point is that IF the restaurant is labelled online that it’s a Dim Sum restaurant then better mention it somewhere that you don’t serve it the whole day.”

“We had a good experience for a weekend lunch. Saturday lunch was walk-in only (can only book dinners) but glad we got a table. Booster seats for kids available. Changing for babies available. Felt roomier than the Canary Wharf branch which is a plus. Food was easy to order, and we did not wait long. Peking duck was delicious, same with egg tofu pork meat stew. Overall it was a good meal, we did not feel rushed, portions were plenty.”

“Amazing experience. Friendly and attentive service. Walked in on a busy Saturday night with no reservation and they accommodated for us straight away. Delicious food. Unfortunately only managed to take two photos. Highly recommend!”
