About Orient London

Orient London is a Chinese restaurant in London's Chinatown, at 15 Wardour St, cooking Szechuan and Cantonese dishes. Dim sum is served in the evening as well, so dinner can start with it, though the evening dim sum menu is shorter and cheung fun is not served after 5pm. Ginger scallion lobster comes with garlic noodles, and Peking duck is served as a half order with wrappers, cucumbers, scallions and hoisin sauce. Fried rice dishes include the Orient House Special Rice. Vegan and vegetarian dishes are on the menu, and the staff can make other dishes vegan on request. Tables can be booked, and a queue forms outside at times.

Customer Review Summary

Lobster is the most frequent draw, described as fresh and juicy in a salted egg yolk coating and again with ginger scallion and garlic noodles. Close behind are the steamed eel with soy sauce, Peking duck served with wrappers, cucumbers and hoisin, beef honeycomb tripe in black pepper sauce, and a Japanese tofu pot with mushrooms and minced pork. A vegetarian visitor praised the Cantonese sweet and sour tofu, and another reviewer singled out the sweet and sour chicken for its pineapple flavour. Several describe quick, attentive service and staff helpful with recommendations. The complaints are substantial, though. Fried rice with beef and chicken was called flavourless, a beef brisket pot arrived not piping hot, and the charsiu was fatty with tasteless duck. One diner suspected the sweet and sour pork had been pre cooked. A longtime dim sum regular says quality has slipped and that cheung fun stops after 5pm. One reviewer felt rushed, with staff repeatedly clearing plates while diners were still eating despite empty tables.

“I booked a table for my friend’s birthday. We were running late, so I changed the booking, but as we managed to get there earlier than the new booking, and I could see there were tables free, we just walked in. The food was delicious! Every bite was delectable. We were both so impressed with our meal. The service was absolutely amazing too, the staff were so attentive. One sip of water and they were refilling your glass! They brought out dishes quick too and cleared tables for the next dish /drinks just as swiftly. The atmosphere was nice too. We enjoyed the decor and the quiet space. We shall be back.”

“Tried this place on a visit to London. They had sufficient vegan/vegetarian dishes but the thing that stood out the most was that the staff assured us that anything we ordered could be made vegan and would satisfy our dietary requirements. We went with the Cantonese sweet and sour tofu, veg friend rice and eggplant and it was really quite excellent. Nothing too special about the atmosphere. Service was good.”

“The restaurant was quite busy when we arrived, which gave us high expectations. The sweet and sour chicken was easily the highlight of the meal, quite unique, with a noticeable pineapple flavour that worked really well. Unfortunately, the fried rice with beef and chicken was a letdown. The rice itself was decent, but the beef was completely flavourless, honestly some of the blandest meat I’ve ever been served. The chicken wasn’t much better and lacked any real flavour. What completely ruined the experience, however, was the service. Despite there being several empty tables and no queue outside, the staff repeatedly came over to clear plates and ask if we had finished while we were still eating. It felt like they were trying to rush us out of the restaurant for no apparent reason. Dining out is about more than just food, it’s about relaxing and enjoying time with the people you’re with. Instead, we felt pressured throughout the meal and couldn’t enjoy our conversation without constant interruptions. The food had some good points, but the service left such a negative impression that I wouldn’t return.”

“It’s an acquired taste. The meat is delicious, and the octopus is delicious. If you like Chinese food, you’ll enjoy it; if not, it’s not worth going there. The service is rather unusual.”
