About Old Town 97

Old Town 97 is a Chinese restaurant on Wardour St in London's Chinatown, serving Cantonese dishes alongside Malaysian ones. Its egg-wrapped fried rice rotates and is offered only in a midday window, finished in tomato sauce, curry, or black pepper. Roast meats come as a BBQ combo of duck and char siu, served over rice or in noodle soup. Beef brisket has its own set of dishes, among them a noodle soup. A student discount is offered. The restaurant is at 19 Wardour St and open daily.

Customer Review Summary

Roast duck and BBQ meats draw the most praise, with diners describing crisp skin, succulent char siu and a three-kind BBQ plate that was tender with the right sweetness. Close behind are the beef brisket dishes, including curry beef brisket with rice and a brisket noodle soup, along with hor fun that several say has wok hei. Others mention roast duck noodle soup with a light broth, mee goreng, spicy wonton, fresh choi sum and generous portions. Food is described as coming out quickly, though the place is busy and a long line can form outside that moves fast. The LSE fried rice divides opinion. One reviewer found it an interesting twist, while another called the rice dry and hard, the pork chop chewy and fatty, and the egg drop sauce unable to rescue it. One diner found the roast duck a little overdone, and another felt waiters rushed the order and were not the nicest when asked for two more minutes. Staff are otherwise called friendly and helpful, and one reviewer notes they stored a suitcase in a safe space.

“Very busy and rightfully so. Starting with their welcoming way of greeting us to taking their time explaining their menu, the service was excellent. Their recommendations were perfect. The Cantonese duck, pork belly and rice, fried shrimp noodles, and ginger broccoli were very delicious. Everyone was enjoying their food. Definitely recommend this place.”

“I am so so glad I found this place on my way to a day out at the museums with my daughters. Food came super quick, was absolutely delicious and would 100% recommend! We had the Hor Fun, Duck Egg noodles and wonton soup. I can recommend all of it. Amazing place and will come here again.”

“LSE fried rice at old town 97, Leicester square. Tried two branches and this place seems a bit run down. Thankfully only had one dish the lse fried rice which was fried rice topped will fried egg, fatty pork chops and egg drop sauce. Sadly the rice, the star of the show was a major let down but a common let down in a majority Chinese places. Dry and hard but not undercooked. Not even the egg drop sauce could rescue it. Afghan egg drop soup is nicer than this. Pork chop was chewy and fatty, the only decent thing was the fried egg. Overall, probably best to anyway but sadly you can't get carb fix here, not even the table next to us were satisfied with their plain rice. I feel like Chinese food is a waste of money, better spent on a mcdonalds or wetherspoons in that respect.”

“The place is really busy (at most times) especially on the weekend, the line outside can be quite long but it does move quite fast. The food itself was good, waiters were definitely rushing us to order and not the nicest when we politely asked for 2 more minutes- nevertheless I assume it’s because they want people in and out fast which we understand. Food comes out pretty fast which is another bonus and the restaurant’s location is easy to find in the heart of Chinatown.”

“I ordered a beef brisket noodle (ho fun), it was delicious. Just like the beef brisket Ho fun in Hong Kong, feel like I’m eating in Hong Kong. Loved it!!! (As I’m from Hong Kong) Good price with the food and student discount! I had a suitcase, and they have a really good service where they helped me to store my suitcase in a safe space. Food and service 10/10 ♥️🥰🤩”
