About The George and Monkey
The George and Monkey is a pub at 68 Amwell St in Islington, London, and has been open since 1824. Fifteen draft lines rotate through craft and keg beer, with no cask ales, so the selection changes from visit to visit. A wine list, cider and a back bar of specialist spirits sit alongside the beer. Food centres on a stonebaked pizza menu of about ten pizzas, and a pizza and pint lunch deal pairs it with a drink. The pub has two rooms, with a solid wood servery and a back room with a fireplace and bare floors. Monkey pictures and oddities cover the walls. Large groups can book, including the front area on a Sunday afternoon, and roasts are served on Sundays. The pub comes from the same team behind Ninth Ward in Clerkenwell, the Temple of Foo in St Paul's and the Chapel Market Tavern in Angel.
Good to know
“Established in 1824. A local neighbourhood staple for 200 hundred years. The George & Monkey is a traditional independent London pub located in the picturesque backstreets of Islington. We have fifteen draft beer lines that regularly rotate to showcase the very best from the UK craft beer scene, a carefully curated wine list and a back bar packed with a variety of specialist spirits. To accompany our drinks menus we have a hugely popular stonebaked pizza menu. The George & Monkey comes from the same team behind Ninth Ward in Clerkenwell, the Temple of Foo in St Paul’s and the Chapel Market Tavern in Angel.”

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the rotating beer selection, with praise for a craft range described as constantly changing and curated by staff who clearly love ales, plus the pub's own lager and a Paulaner pint. Pizza comes close behind, with diners calling the pizzas tasty and one describing a pizza and pint lunch deal as lush. Several praise friendly, welcoming bar staff, including a knowledgeable barman, and a large Sunday group booking was given the whole front area. The shabby chic interior draws comment too, from the monkey references on the walls to bare floors, vintage toilets and the raunchy photos in the ladies' bathroom, and some enjoy sitting out front in the sun. The recurring gap is cask ale, which two reviewers note is absent, and one reviewer adds that the lack of coasters was a small minus. One reviewer found the staff wholly uninterested on a quiet Saturday, felt unwelcome, and says this has been a pattern across several visits. Others close on pints enjoyed outside under a heater above the outdoor table.

“Lovely pub. Had a pizza here with the pizza and pint lunch deal (£14 I think). Pizza was lush and had the pubs lager which was tasty. Sat out front enjoying the sun.”

“Fantastic experience at the George and Monkey! We had a large group booking on a Sunday afternoon and the manager Pete kindly gave us the whole front area, it was brilliant. The food was top-notch - we all absolutely devoured our pizzas 🍕🤤 Friendly staff and quick service, good selection of drinks too. Special shoutout to the raunchy photos in the ladies’ bathroom, absolutely hilarious! We’ll definitely be back, thank you 🙏🏼”

“Far and away the best pub in north London. Me and my mates have been locals here all through uni; all the bar staff have been incredibly welcoming to us the whole time and genuinely care about punters experience. Further, the beer selection here, constantly changing is one you can tell is curated by staff who really love ales and experimenting. Truly 5 stars all round.”

“Very nice and welcoming staff, cosy local and tasty beers, even local ones! The little minus was the absence of coasters. Nonetheless the vintage toilets were priceless (hehe).”

“Stopped off with my partner for early dinner pre show at Sadlers Wells theatre. Pleasantly surprised by the quality of the pizzas and dip. Friendly and helpful bar staff. Good ambiance in the pub with a mix of clients. Recommended”
