About George and Dragon
George and Dragon is a Grade II listed pub at 240 St John St in Clerkenwell, London, established in 1889. The ground floor keeps its original Victorian mosaic floors, with large windows, tiled interiors and lots of seats. The bar pours Guinness and Gravity Theory Cider, and the kitchen serves pub classics and a roast. Upstairs, the Island surf and turf restaurant occupies the first floor and cooks with British produce. The building was formerly called The Peasant before it relaunched as The George & Dragon, and it belongs to the Barworks family. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers return most to the look of the place, singling out the large windows, tiled interiors and colour scheme, with several calling the interior beautiful. Drinks come next. A few praise the Guinness as good, and one regular enjoys the Gravity Theory Cider. One group found the roast excellent, and others simply call the food great. Friendly bar staff come up repeatedly, including one who was accommodating to a family arriving with kids and a push chair. Neighbours say they are pleased the pub has opened, and a couple look forward to the restaurant upstairs. The criticisms are specific. One neighbour reports noise late into the night disturbing people who live nearby. A party of six at a late lunch was told the kitchen was too busy to take their order and had to wait, which the reviewer found annoying with children along. Staff responded kindly and offered a few freebies as an apology.

“The food was excellent - though as it was their 4th roast since the relaunch, it was a little chaotic. We booked for 6 for a late lunch - arrived earlier had a drink and when wanting to order were told the kitchen was too busy and we had to wait to order. Whilst this was quite annoying especially as we were with children, the staff did a great job defusing our frustration by being kind, understanding and offering up a few freebie’s as an apology. We were very happy to have remained patient because the roast was excellent. Definitely recommend. I’m sure they’ll find a nice pace as things settle. We’ll be back :)”

“This pub was previously called "The Peasant". I work nearby and in all the years of doing so, I only ever visited that pub on two occasions. When I saw the pub was under construction, I was keen to see what it would be and when I found out it was going to be The George & Dragon, I definitely wanted to make an effort to pop in. I love the exterior and its beautiful colour. I also love the interior, the design, the colour scheme, the furniture, layout and the ambience. The staff have been very nice, warm and its lovely talking to them each time in, which is regularly during my break. I definitely recommend coming here, its nice to relax here and enjoy a delicious Gravity Theory Cider.”

“I'm a neighbour and am so pleased this is here. What a fantastic pub! Beautiful big windows, tiled interiors, and great Guinness. Can't wait to come more often and try the restaurant when it opens too. Hope the rest of the community supports it because you can never have too many excellent pubs. I shouldn't be worried, judging by street traffic it's already very popular.”

Good to know
“George & Dragon is a Grade II listed pub on St John Street, first established in 1889 and revitalised for Clerkenwell today. The ground-floor pub is an unpretentious neighbourhood local — elevated pub classics, a carefully considered drinks programme, and carefully preserved Victorian character, right down to the original mosaic floors. Upstairs, Island brings its Michelin-recommended cooking to the first floor: the surf and turf restaurant from chefs Tom Brown and Brad Carter, celebrating British produce where land meets sea. A proper London pub with a special restaurant above, rooted in its history and part of the Barworks family.”
