About The Union Coffee House

Running from breakfast through to lunch, The Union Coffee House is an independent coffee shop on Great George Street in Leeds, sitting near the hospital and west of the Leeds Art Museum, away from the main tourist route. Eggs and toast anchor the morning menu, with the signature Eggstravaganza pairing streaky bacon with sourdough and avocado, and posh beans on toast arriving with poached eggs. Soup of the day fills out the lunch side, and coffee is the standard order alongside it. The kitchen changes the menu regularly, and the team has prepared off-menu dishes for guests with dietary needs. Booking ahead is advised, and a wait is common at peak times. The café opens daily, with a step-free entrance for visitors with mobility needs and high chairs for families with young children. Dogs are welcome, and student discounts and loyalty cards are available.

Customer Review Summary

Breakfast and brunch plates draw the most attention, with the "posh beans on toast" singled out for its poached eggs and presentation, and the French toast with sliced peaches and crumble described as the standout of a table that also ordered the Eggstravaganza with streaky bacon, fresh sourdough and rich avocado. Coffee follows close behind, called excellent and good across several visits, alongside a mocha, an oat milk matcha latte and a refreshing iced peach tea. Reviewers repeatedly describe fresh ingredients, generous portions and warm, helpful staff, and one notes a student discount and loyalty cards. Not everyone agrees: one visitor found the staff less than welcoming and the atmosphere uncomfortable, another felt a quick lunch was expensive for a single slice of toast, and one mentions waits during peak hours. The detail that recurs most warmly is the kitchen preparing an off menu meal for a diner with a medical dietary restriction.

Staff could be a little friendlier and more welcoming. I personally found the atmosphere a bit uncomfortable and wasn’t able to relax as much as I had hoped.

The lovely staff went above & beyond to make me a meal (not on the menu) with ingredients I can eat due to a medical problem. It was so kind & delicious. The coffee was excellent too. They made me feel so welcome & at ease. Recommend 100%. Thank you!

Had a lovely breakfast here. Everything was fresh, delicious, and beautifully presented. The coffee was great, and the two boys who served us were very friendly and welcoming. Really appreciated their excellent service✨ Will definitely be back✌️🥂

I was taken aback how good the "posh beans on toast" was. So much flavour, nicely presented and cooked to perfections (poached eggs). The Mocha was delicious. The service was friendly. For me it's a solid 4.5 out of 5, losing half a point for two small - but important - issues. For a quick lunch it's expensive. I think the the posh b on t for £12 could have maybe come with an extra slice of toast (instead of just one). And at £4.50 for a mocha, maybe a little biscuit with it. But there is no doubting the quality - just as a pop in, lunch and pop out it's not as value for money as some of the other local establishments. However they have made a loyal customer of me.

We had a great breakfast here on Sunday. The coffee was good and the food was well prepared with good quality ingredients. It’s located west of the Leeds Art Museum so it’s off the high volume tourist track, which made for a quiet, relaxing start of our day full of art.

How this listing is sourced

Where the data comes from
Name, address, hours, contact details, amenities, ratings and review counts come from the business's publicly available profile data — not from the owner and not from paid submissions.
How it stays current
Listings are re-checked in batches against their public profile, and anything reported as wrong is corrected at the source rather than patched on the page.
How it is ranked
Placement is never sold. Every business on the page is ordered and compared using the same public signals, so an owner cannot pay to move up.
