About Sonder
Sonder is a coffee shop in Leeds Grand Arcade that doubles as a "Japantro" lifestyle store. The interior combines retro and Japanese minimalist design, and the handmade homeware pieces on display are available to buy. The space is small, with seating both downstairs and upstairs. The drinks menu runs from a flat white to a Biscoff latte and chai, and drinks arrive with latte art. Pastries are plant-based, and the choice includes croissants as well as a pistachio croissant.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often come for the interior, a blend of retro and Japanese styling with a dark, moody downstairs and handmade homeware pieces, which many call cosy and beautiful. Drinks come close behind, with the honeycomb latte, banoffee matcha, Biscoff latte, flat white and chai all singled out. Reviewers also praise the generously sized croissants and the plant-based pastries, and a few liked the crockery they were served in. Several describe the place as calm enough for working on a laptop or reading, though it is small and can get crowded. The criticism is narrower but specific. One reviewer found a male staff member cold and unfriendly, said the cinnamon roll tasted old and stale, and objected to the shop closing early and to being asked for tips. Another found the coffee too light for their taste despite the latte art, and one noted the downstairs is not really accessible. Even happy visitors mention pastries running out, with the pistachio croissant already sold out by midday.

“Really weird vibe with the male staff member. He was super cold and unfriendly. Having checked other reviews, I can see this is a recurring problem. Cinnamon roll tasted old and stale and to top it off they also decided to shut 1.5 hours before closing time. Also requesting tips when you know you’re being rude/providing poor service is so weird. The hype is really just for the aesthetic but once you experience the service and quality of food/drinks how can anyone be a returning customer.”

“Sonder is an absolute gem of a coffee shop. It may be small, but that's part of its charm. I honestly love everything about it – from the beautiful décor and cosy atmosphere to the stylish cups and attention to detail throughout. It has such a welcoming feel and is the perfect place to sit and enjoy a great coffee. The drinks are excellent, the service is friendly, and it's clear that a lot of care has gone into creating such a lovely space. If you're looking for a cosy independent café in Leeds,”

“This cafe is a hidden gem. The space itself is so unique. It is absolutely stunning and incredibly well thought out. I especially loved the dark, moody vibes downstairs. Both members of staff on the day were helpful, attentive and welcoming. As for the drinks, the honeycomb latte and banoffee matcha were both lovely!”

“Sonder is a cozy café in Leeds Grand Arcade with lovely decor, making it a nice spot to hang out and relax. While I wasn't a fan of the coffee taste (it was a bit too light for my liking) the presentation was on point, served in a nice cup with perfect latte art. It is worth a try!”

“What a beautiful little coffee shop. This place is absolutely stunning. The coffee and pastry were delicious and really fresh. The interior is beautiful with handmade homeware pieces that you can purchase. There is also loads of seating downstairs, which is really handy. Definitely recommend coming here if you’re looking for a nice coffee in Leeds.”
