About The Garden Cafe

The Garden Cafe sits down an alleyway off Church Street in Hereford, a courtyard cafe with a small indoor seating area and a vegan and vegetarian menu. Regulars on the menu include the fried egg focaccia sandwich, tomatoes on toast with vegan ricotta, and the Garden Cafe bowl, alongside carrot cake, brownies, and banana bread with chocolate butter. The courtyard provides outdoor seating for those who want to eat in the open air, and a step-free entrance allows visitors with mobility needs to reach the counter without difficulty. High chairs are available for families with young children, and dogs are welcome throughout. It is a walk-in cafe with no reservations taken, open Tuesday to Saturday during the day and closed on Mondays and Sundays. Coffee and cake are also available to take away for those heading elsewhere.

Customer Review Summary

Cakes and bakes lead the praise at this small vegan and vegetarian courtyard cafe, with reviewers singling out the carrot cake, the chocolate brownies and warm banana bread with chocolate butter. Close behind is the coffee, called the best one reviewer had in Hereford, with a cortado also mentioned. Savoury dishes draw their own mentions: a thick homemade vegetable soup with toasted foccacia, a fried egg foccacia sandwich, the Garden Cafe bowl, and tomatoes on toast with vegan ricotta. One non-vegan reviewer says they will be going back. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly, and the small garden with plants gets steady mention alongside the tucked-away alleyway location. The main drawbacks come from one visitor with a young child: the inside is very small and was busy, there were no highchairs and no baby changing facilities, and the toilet is a small one around the outside. The same reviewer notes there was no kids menu, but staff put together a little meal for their daughter.

“We were seeking out an independent café and the 5* reviews led us here, and they are well-deserved. Tucked away in a peaceful hidden courtyard, The Garden Café is a real gem. Just a couple of minutes from the Cathedral, it has a friendly vibe from the moment you open the door. The coffee is very good, and the fried egg foccacia sandwich was a revelation! Highly recommended!”

“Great find! A vegen friendly cafe just off Church Street in Hereford. There are options to sit inside or out in small garden area. Nice selection of food and drinks coupled with good service. Cakes to die for!! Had the Garden Cafe bowl which was wholesome and tasty. The warm banana bread with chocolate butter is not to be missed either. I'm not vegan and I will be going back.”

“A true hidden gem! My parents and I had the most delicious meal here. We had come down to see the Mappa Mundi but lunch here was a real highlight of the day! The staff were so friendly, the place is very cute and cosy and the brownies are not to be missed! Would 100% come again when I'm next in Hereford ❤️”
