About Opuz Kitchen & Bar Hemel

Opuz Kitchen & Bar Hemel is a Turkish restaurant at 162 Marlowes in Hemel Hempstead, built around an open kitchen-bar with a stone oven and charcoal grill at centre stage, so diners can watch their food being cooked. Skewers of lamb and chicken come off that grill in view of the dining room. The Just the Two of Us platter is a sharing plate of grilled lamb and chicken skewers, lamb ribs and wings, served with rice, bulgur wheat and salad. Starters include a meze selection and borek, and the dips, among them a chilli dip and a creamy one, arrive with flatbread baked fresh. Desserts include baklava and chocolate cake. The restaurant caters for group bookings. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary

Grilled meats lead the praise, with the mixed grill and the sharing platter for two most often singled out, along with lamb ribs, skewers, chicken and wings described as tender, smoky and full of flavour. Close behind are the dips with freshly baked bread or pita, the meze selection and the borek, and several diners call the portions generous and good value. One large group lunch says the food came out quickly. Service draws repeated praise as friendly and attentive, and one diner says a server went above and beyond to keep allergens out of the meal. The main complaint comes from one reviewer on a late lunch visit when the restaurant was nearly empty: the mixed platter seemed small for what it cost, the food and later the tea were slow to arrive, and some staff were chatting among themselves. Two anniversary diners describe celebration touches: one was allowed to bring a cake that staff served, and another received a surprise dessert of chocolate cake and baklava.

“We had a group lunch of 23 people at Opuz Kitchen Hemel over the weekend, and it was our first time visiting the restaurant. We were genuinely impressed with the whole experience. The food was excellent — everything was full of flavour, portions were generous, and the food came out quickly despite the size of our group. The quality and portion sizes made it excellent value for money, and everyone in our group thoroughly enjoyed their meals. I specifically enjoyed the Borek and the Mixed Shish. A special mention absolutely has to go to Aysh, who provided outstanding service throughout. She was incredibly attentive, friendly and professional, and went above and beyond to accommodate our special requests. She kept everything organised and made sure that the entire lunch ran smoothly, which made a huge difference when catering for such a large group. It was clear that Aysh genuinely cared about making sure we had a great experience, and she handled everything with a smile and a fantastic attitude. Her service really made the occasion even more special. Overall, a fantastic first experience at Opuz Kitchen Hemel. Great food, generous portions, good value and exceptional service — especially from Aysh. We would definitely come back and would happily recommend the restaurant to others.”

“Had an amazing impromptu dinner here with my daughter. Right from entering the building the staff were lovely. Our server Aysh was very attentive and having explained my allergens (not the top 14!) she went above and beyond to make sure my food was free of them. It was also very good value for money for what we had: starter and main for myself and main and dessert for my daughter. When I next come back to Hemel Hempstead I will definitely be coming back here.”

“Honestly food was amazing, but the service was incredible. Lauren was an absolute angel and because of her and the other lovely staff, we’ll definitely be coming back. Thanks so much Lauren and team for a lovely evening!”

“Back again at my favourite restaurant, and once again it didn’t disappoint! The food is absolutely outstanding – fresh, full of flavour, and beautifully presented every time. The mixed grill was cooked to perfection, the meze selection was delicious, and the freshly baked bread with dips was the perfect start. What really makes this place special is the warm atmosphere, friendly staff, and welcoming people. You always feel looked after, and it’s somewhere you genuinely look forward to coming back to. Highly recommended if you’re looking for amazing food and a fantastic dining experience. Can’t wait for my next visit! 👏🍽️🥂”

“An absolutely perfect evening. We went for our anniversary celebration. The staff, led by Aysh, took such good care of us. We started with the dips appetizer and it was huge! Each one tasted better than the next, with the most fluffy and delicious pita bread. But then our entree arrived. We splurged and shared the Just the Two of Us - featuring a seemingly endless display of chicken and lamb variations. This had to be some of the best food we have ever eaten. Perfectly cooked and seasoned, lamb ribs, skewers, chicken, wings, it just went on and on with the fluffiest white rice we've ever eaten. At the end, the staff surprised us with an anniversary dessert of chocolate cake and baklava. We felt so lucky have found this beautiful restaurant with the most welcoming and exceptional staff. Thank you, Ashe, for going above and beyond and making us feel so special. I wish this kind of first class service and food for everyone!”

Highlights

“Opuz Kitchen's sleek and chic interiors are smart enough for City lunches whilst remaining casual and reasonably-priced enough to enjoy splashing out London-style on your own time and dime. Centre stage is the kitchen-bar complete with stone oven and charcoal grill, where you can relax and experience the pure theatre of the Turkish kitchen as your meal is prepared before your very eyes. The menu combines traditional Turkish-Mediterranean cuisine with fine dining flourishes and fusion riffs - think sumac and pomegranate martinis, exotic breads with Medjool date butter and inventive, rose-tinted desserts among its sophisticated offerings”
