Quick info
About The Olive Tree Berkhamsted
The Olive Tree Berkhamsted is an independently owned Greek restaurant at 270 High St in Berkhamsted, running as a taverna since 2015. The menu lists 33 dishes and is built around meze, so tables can share several plates at once. Mixed dips arrive with pita, and the souvlaki comes in pork and chicken versions, also served with pita. The lunch menu adds a gyros wrap and lamb rump among its large plates. Non-meat eaters have choices of their own, and new dishes rotate onto the menu. The bar mixes cocktails including the Santorini Sunset and the Hugo Spritz. Inside, the decor follows a Greek theme. The entrance and front seating look small, but the room opens up with more space toward the back. The team accommodates allergens and food allergies.

Customer Review Summary
Friendly, welcoming staff are the most frequent draw, with reviewers describing attentive service and several noting that servers handled food allergies knowledgeably. The food is called fresh and delicious, from a gyros wrap and lamb rump at lunch to pork and chicken souvlaki with fresh pita, and one diner calls the meze the best they have had in a very long time. One reviewer recommends the Santorini Sunset and Hugo Spritz cocktails. The cozy, well heated dining room and Greek decor also earn praise, along with plenty of choice for non meat eaters. The caveat comes from two reviewers who say portions have shrunk while costs rose. One misses the giant serving of whitebait and calls the mixed dips extortionate for the small amount of pita served. The other found a waitress cold and indifferent on a recent dinner visit. Still, one party that arrived late for its booking says the staff accommodated them without hesitation.

“We really enjoyed our meal here. Beautifully decorated inside, friendly staff and delicious food. Would definitely go again and recommend to friends. Portion sizes were perfect for us. The pita was so fresh and the pork and chicken souvlaki was tasty!”

“As locals we have eaten here on several occasions since the restaurant opened. A couple of days ago had dinner at the restaurant where it was quite noticeable that the menu had changed to offering less costly dishes with much smaller portions but at increased cost to the customer. Normally the waiting staff are very helpful and welcoming but for us our waitress was indifferent and cold. Quite disappointed on this occasion as the restaurant did not live up to our past experiences. Sad to post this review as a bit reluctant to return due to numerous other eateries in the town offering better menus with more reasonable prices and welcoming staff”

“Decent restaurant with a very good reputation in Berkhamsted. Service here is always IMMACULATE … dare I say best service in the local area, and always very accommodating when it comes to allergens. The food has always been good, but perhaps not as good as in measure of the prices charged, especially as they have decreased their portion sizes (I miss the GIANT serving of white bait you used to get for the same money). The mixed dips are also extortionate, especially given the small serving of pita that comes with it. Still, the hosts and atmosphere is absolutely superb - which is the reason we keep returning to this place.”

“We visited The Olive Tree in Berkhamsted on Friday night for our work party and had an absolutely fantastic experience. The food was amazing, the service was excellent, and the cocktails were great! I especially recommend the Santorini Sunset and the Hugo Spritz! The staff were lovely and welcoming, and the menu has so many great options. I honestly can’t recommend this place enough and can’t wait to go back!”
