About The Red Lion
The Red Lion is a pub on The Green in Guildford, with a front aspect looking onto the village green and a garden at the rear. Inside, open wood burning fires, flagstone flooring and wooden beams set the room, and the bar pours cask ales alongside a wine list. The kitchen serves roast beef with Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes and gravy, pork belly bites as a starter, and sticky toffee pudding for dessert. Gluten free options are on the menu. A private function room holds between 10 and 40 guests, which suits groups planning a gathering. Reservations are required, and dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Sunday roast is what reviewers return to most, with beef and chicken described as cooked to perfection, a huge homemade Yorkshire pudding, crispy roast potatoes and a gravy one diner called the best they had tasted. Close behind are the starters and puddings: pork belly bites, halloumi fries, a homemade quiche, sticky toffee pudding, basque cheesecake and a cranberry and white chocolate cheesecake. Several mention gluten free options and a vegetarian roast. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and attentive, and the front and rear gardens overlooking the village green get frequent mention, along with a welcome for dogs. The one criticism comes from a group lunch where the gravy was good but not enough, so they had to ask for more, and the potatoes could be better. One reviewer had sausages and mash followed by a peanut butter parfait while eating alone in the beer garden, and another family cycled over, let the children play on the cricket green and sat with the dog in the evening sun.

“First time visitors to the Red Lion, dined in the garden at the rear. The service was excellent, the menu was superb with numerous gluten free options. The homemade quiche was first class. The Red Lion is also very dog friendly. Will definitely be returning and can highly recommend.”

“Excellent experience at the Red Lion Inn! All staff were friendly, welcoming, and happy to engage in conversation. It was also lovely to have the choice of either sitting in the front or rear garden to eat our lunch. We chose the rear garden, and had a great table in the shade. Our meal was very enjoyable, full of flavour and didn't take long to arrive. The menu was also very interesting with different meals that you don't often expect on a pub selection. Thank you and we look forward to visiting again!”

“The service was outstanding, kind, professional and attentive. Her name was Esme… and another gentleman working behind the bar.. The food and drinks matched… it’s not often you pop out to a pub and your can rate it 12 out of 10. Similarly the atmosphere was relaxed with a positive sunset evening vibe. It’s great to cycle there with the kids and they can play over the road on the cricket green, whilst you sit with the dog bathed in the sunset warm summer golden glow. Perfect.”

“I met my wife in this pub 2023, and been travelling regularly since then. To my positive surprise this year 12 June 2026 the pub had new owners and just recently refurbished. The food is outstanding, I would say gastro at the minimum and premium restaurant. Everything is made from scratch in-hous, comes highly recommended. PS my wife says their sticky toffee pudding is the best ever 👌🏻”

“Inside, our pub has everything you could wish for in a traditional village local, including freshly prepared food, a fine selection of cask ales, open wood burning fires, traditional flagstone flooring and wooden beams, and extensive wine list. We also have a private function room that can cater for anywhere between 10 and 40 guests. Our outdoor seating areas are peaceful and relaxing, and you have a choice of seating, either overlooking the village green, where you can watch the world go by, or in our own colourful pub garden and patio area.”
