About The Gate Pub

The Gate Pub is a country pub on Bryants Bottom Rd in Great Missenden, with a menu that adds South Asian-twist dishes to pub cooking. Vegetable samosas and chicken pakoras come as starters, and Sunday roasts arrive with Yorkshire pudding, crackling and vegetables. Dogs are welcome, and the pub gives them free biscuits. The garden has a view of the Chiltern Hills, and two children's play areas with slides and swings sit in the outdoor space. The pub stands in a small village between fields and woods.

Customer Review Summary

Sunday roast is the draw reviewers raise most, with one calling it the best they have had for its crackling, Yorkshire pudding and plentiful veg, and another noting a late roast served after the lamb ran out, so chicken was used instead. Close behind are the South Asian touches on the menu, notably veg samosas alongside a Pimms, plus chicken pakoras and whitebait. A few praise the garden and its view of the Chiltern Hills, and welcoming service that coped with a large group of riders and a lone bartender. The play areas draw the sharpest complaints, with reviewers describing broken swings, falling hand rails, torn cargo netting and rotten decking. Others report slow service, including a drink asked for four times, a main that took a long wait, and desserts withdrawn after a power cut left ice cream unavailable, which diners say they learned only after eating. One reviewer found the beetroot roast arrived without the promised Yorkshire pudding and cauliflower cheese, and another could not connect to the advertised WiFi.

“Overpriced, sub-par, stingey. I had to ask for my drink 4 times before it was served. The samosa starter was nice, but seemed randomly placed next to a roast. The beetroot roast only came with 1 potato, and lacked the stuffing, Yorkshire pudding, and cauliflower cheese that were supposed to be "included". The "3 scoop" ice cream only came with one scoop. The food, while pleasant enough, just lacked the gastro pub taste that one would expect at these prices. Will never be coming back. Disappointed with my meal.”

“AVOID! On paper this should be a great pub for families with young children - 2 play areas which in their prime I’m sure would have been great but to say they are tired would be generous, they are boarding dilapidated and dangerous! Hand rails on ladders up to swings falling off, broken swings, broken cargo netting, rotten and broken decking, questionable lean on wooden structures, bird poo on slides. The food was reasonable value but the quality nothing to write home about. The pub is set in some lovely surroundings and has a lot of potential but desperately needs major investment.”

“We have just had a lovely meal at the Gate Sarah was very welcoming and did extremely well serving everyone considering she was the only person behind the bar, there were some people complaining but I didn’t see an issue with anything Sarah delt with it very well! We will definitely be back!”

“AVOID! Just had lunch at The Gate. Service was poor. They had had a power cut sometime in the past 24hrs so not all the pumps were working and/or the beer wasn't cold. Consequently 6 out of 8 desserts on the adult menu and 4 put of 5 on the kids menu come with ice cream or are a sorbet and so weren't available. They only told us about all of this AFTER we had finished our main course, (which took 45 min to arrive), rather than when we walked in which was pretty cynical of them.”

“A pleasant village pub with a good range of food available, some with a South Asian twist, which befiited the proprieters. My partner had a BLT for which they did not skimp on the ingredients and I had chicken pakoras and whitebait from the starter members. We sat out in the garden which had nice relaxing relaxing view of the Chiltern Hills. The interior is cosy. There is a good play area for children and dogs are welcome. So why only four stars - the young man serving our drinks, taking our food order and serving some of our food did not seem happy in his work. An older man possibly, the manager was friendly, checked on our meal and ensured the area was clean and tidy. We would visit again if in the area.”
