About The Royal Standard of England
On Forty Green in Beaconsfield, The Royal Standard of England is a pub that describes itself as the oldest free house in England, with over 1000 years of sheltering wayfarers. The original sections sit near the bar, with heavy beams and tiled floors, and newer expanded sections extend the building. Several open fires are lit inside, including one enormous fireplace. The bar serves cask ales, local ales and stouts, including the pub's own brews, plus 0% and 0.5% options on tap. In the kitchen, British dishes such as fish and chips and pork belly are joined by pigeon on toast among the specials. The pub is open daily.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often point to the age and character of the building, with heavy beams, tiled floors and several open fires, especially the famously enormous fireplace near the bar, where the older rooms feel more authentic than the newer extensions that one reviewer says feel like a tourist attraction. Food draws mostly warm comments. Diners name pork belly, beef ribs, pigeon on toast, prawns in Mediterranean style, fish and chips and bouillabaisse, while the stout, local cask ales and 0% options on tap also earn praise. Complaints centre on service and consistency. One party describes drinks delivered to the wrong table, only three of six arriving until the mains came out, and food that was not very hot. Another found every dish tasteless apart from the stout, and one reviewer skipped dessert after a long wait on a busy day. One mentions flies in the garden and suggests eating indoors, and another suggests booking in advance. One reviewer returned for a second visit specifically for those prawns.

“Fantastic place. Definitely recommend. We tried 2 specials (beef ribs and pigeon on toast) and it was amazing. Atmosphere and service are great.”

“We were really looking forward to visiting here however I was a let down on the service. I phoned earlier in the day to confirm about the booking and ask if the table was as accessible as possible of my grandmother, I was firstly met with ‘Hello’ on the phone nothing else, so I was completely unaware that I had come through to the right place. Whilst explaining all of this I was told they can help as they were ‘in the middle of lunch service’ and can I ‘phone back later’. We arrived at the restaurant and we had our drinks order taken firstly our drinks were given to the wrong table, then when we asked about our drinks and they were given to us we only received 3/6 drinks and the other 3 didn’t appear until the main course had come out even after asking three staff members for them. The food was good and we really enjoyed the selection however it wasn’t very hot when it came out on the plate. The place does have amazing atmosphere and it’s a really impressive building just a bit of a let down on the other things.”

“Gorgeous, gothic pub that's full of history. The food was incredible and plenty to choose from. Lovely local ales and stouts, including the pubs own brews. This pub is a must-see!”

“After having seen this pub featured in different British shows, we wanted to visit on this recent trip to England. The approach to this pub is down different single lane roads, which was fun!! There was ample parking on our afternoon visit. The outside seating area was shaded in parts, with some cosy little nooks. The interior conjurs up old world style and thoughts of people enjoying their beers over the centuries. We ordered the small portion of fish and chips, the salmon salad and the boulliabaise. Everyone really enjoyed their food.”

“It was our second visit, as we liked our previous experience, especially the prawns in Mediterranean style. Highly recommended for food, as it's breaking standards and offering something more than a typical pub menu. Some flies in the garden, so I would suggest indoor eating. Nice interiors as well.”
