About Spindle & Thread

Spindle & Thread is a pub on Bellfield Rd in High Wycombe that serves a carvery every day, with a choice of four meats and as many vegetables as you like. Dogs are welcome, and a dog menu of full English, sausages and steak gives them a meal of their own while their owners eat from the main menu. That menu also covers all day breakfast, and the dessert list includes jam sponge pudding with custard. The interior has been refurbished and is divided into separate areas. Food and drink are ordered at the bar or through an app, and tables can be booked.

Customer Review Summary

The carvery draws the most mentions, and opinions on it split. Praise centers on a carvery with four choices and as many vegetables as diners want, served quickly with friendly service, and one reviewer plans to bring extended family. Close behind, one regular describes a full dog menu, with a full English and sausages for the dog while the owner has Eggs Benedict. A parent notes staff were kind and understanding with a daughter who has additional needs, and others call the refurbished space good for kids with a cosy vibe. Complaints are just as concrete. One diner found the carvery pork just fat and slimy and the food cold. Another was told the carvery had run out, then saw turkey, pork and beef come out after ordering from the main menu, and was refused a change. A third describes an oily chilli con carne and a chewy, undercooked mixed grill, with staff blaming suppliers. One reviewer reports two in their group had upset stomachs after warmed-up burgers. Another reviewer singles out the warm jam sponge with custard as delicious.

“Visited last night with my husband and 3 children, we have been a few times before and had no problems at all the food was nice and staff were ok. However last night I was shocked, firstly, after ordering at bar my husband came back to table and told me how much the total was for food. It was ment to be kids eat for £1 but it hadn’t been put on, so I asked the lady when she came over about it and she said because I hadn’t asked for kids eat for £1 I couldn’t now add it on, I asked why I couldn’t be refunded for it and she just completely dismissed me and said “ well you should have asked when ordering that u wanted it added and I can’t do nothing about it now! Next time ask!” The place was not busy at all and my kids were very noticeable as she said hello to them when we waked in, there was no sign to say we had to ask and she didn’t even suggest that we should add it when ordering. I thought this was a bit u fair. There was food all over the floor under our table, I found this odd as we booked and the table was reserved, so surely it should have been cleaned up. It wasn’t busy at all. The food came quite quickly but when it did it wasn’t good, my husband had the chilli con carne and it was awful! Just slopped in a bowl, the rice tasted like plastic and the chili was so oily and the portion was like a kids portion it was £15! I took it to the bar and told the lady and she was very disinterested and didn’t believe what I was saying, then she said it was pre made and it was the suppliers and not there fault, she asked if I wanted anything else I said he would have the mixed grill but she said I had to pay the difference of £4 pounds for it! Not caring that my dinner was now getting cold having to wait and my husband would now have to wait for his while we ate. When he finally got his mixed grill, we had all finished our meals at this point! all his meat was inedible, chewy, fatty and undercooked, and the chips were just soaked in oil, I squeezed a chip and it just dripped with oil,I complained again and the woman again seemed like she didn’t believe me so I felt I had to pick the meat up and show her at this point I’m quite annoyed. I squeezed a chip to show her and she said” well they are cooked in oil!” I tried to cut the meat with the steak knife and it wouldn’t cut! I think then she could see it was poor. Again she blamed the suppliers for it. After a while she offered us free desert to the price of the mixed grill, when that came mine was like a kids portion of icecream and my husbands jam sponge pudding tasted like it was nuked in microwave, dry and cold in places. The food was just awful, mine and my kids were edible but wasn’t nothing special. You could see that the staff were talking about us as they were whispering and looking over which made us feel uncomfortable. So as soon as we finished we left, we walked past staff and there was no apology just “ have a good night” said sarcastically.! We will not be returning!”

“No carvery left. Was told we could order from main menu or wait an hour for some beef, very annoyed when 14 minutes later turkey, pork and beef came out after we had ordered from the other menu. Told we couldn't change our minds (even though our food took another 30 minutes) and was called a lier by staff member when I repeated what I had been told about the lack of carvery. Two of our group had upset stomachs (the two who had "warmed up" burgers) and the toilet sinks look like they haven't been cleaned in months.”

“review) Have been here many times but lately with my pooch, as I have discovered they have a full menu for dogs. She enjoys a full English and I have Eggs Benedict. Mine are cooked to perfection and I reckon hers is too judging by the clean bowl. Other times she has had sausages and she will have a steak on her birthday. Staff are amazing with a warm welcome. Nothing is too much trouble. See you very soon. Lucy and Iz”
