About The 78

On Kelvinhaugh St in Glasgow, The 78 is a vegan restaurant at number 10-14 that serves Mexican street food from an entirely vegan menu. The centrepiece is the beef-style birria taco, which comes with a ramekin of birria gravy on the side. Soya Carnitas tacos sit alongside it, and the cauliflower wings come with ranch sauce. The menu also includes corn ribs and loaded fries. A bar list of cocktails and beers covers the drinks. Orders are placed at the bar rather than taken at the table.

Customer Review Summary

The complaints are about service and consistency. One diner with a booking was told the kitchen was closed while the room was full of people eating. Another felt ignored at a table before learning orders go through the bar, and found the guacamole way too salty and the Soya Carnitas gluey. One regular says the Soya Carnitas were out of stock on a return visit, which prompted a third trip.

“Dear The 78 and Paddy (the MVP), We stumbled across your establishment when on holidays in Scotland this week. To be frank, we tried to go somewhere else but the weather was too good so they had no space but we asked the waitress what to do with ourselves and she recommended The 78. We were suspicious when we arrived but decided to stay and give it a go because we were *starving* and totally charmed by the staff. We just wanted to say thanks for a 10/10 time. Thank you for charging my phone (twice). Thank you for all the margaritas (also a special mention to the negronis and mescal sours). Mostly thank you for the Soya Carnitas, they touched our lives - a truly transformational experience. We've been three times in the space of five days (once unintentionally and twice intentionally) and the only regret we have is that the Soya Carnitas were out of stock that second time (which obviously necessitated the third visit). Every Irish Paddy would be proud to know that there is a Paddy in Glasgow making the most beautiful tacos known to mankind. Paddy, you are an absolute legend and we are so proud to know you are 50% Corkonian. Lots of love from Sally and Niamh (from Cork) xoxox We'll be back (threat)”

“I would not say it is the most warm and welcome place. I was ignored by staff because I had the audacity to sit down at a table and expect to be served. I didn’t know you had to order at the bar but I soon figured that out. Otherwise, you’re invisible. Food not the greatest either. Guacamole WAY too salty. Soya carnitas gluey and sweet/spicy. Overall I would not recommend”

“This little neighbourhood gem is well worth a visit. A fantastic selection of beers, I went for Weihenstephan a premium Bavarian blond from the world’s oldest brewery! Absolutely hit the spot. The jewel in the crown is not the decor but the Mexican street food, provided by Antojitos, (won best Scottish street food 2021), a simple selection of high quality tacos. I was tempted by the trio but was recommended the beef Birria. It was exceptionally tasty, great flavour and a ramekin of Birria gravy on the side. Sweet onions and clearly hand made corn tortillas with a hint of dip prior to being flat grilled. Clearly they haven’t lost any of the edge that won them the accolades. Set up as a community company it is well worth supporting. Honest and friendly service. Will be back!”

“Can I just say. This is. The best hospitality experience I have EVER experienced. The women staff were amazing - specifically, the beautiful woman with the long red hair and the beautiful woman with the long brown hair. I believe they’re called Jodie and Susan (respectively). The food is delicious, the drinks are delectable, but Jodie and Susan are downright angels. Mon the 78, Mon Susan and Jodie <3”

“I’ll try to avoid expletives, but this place is ************ amazing. Best vegan restaurant / bar in the west end, and there’s barely anything that comes close to it. The food in here was dyno, as a meat eater you wouldn’t be complaining a bit! The corn ribs especially were tender and lathered in some well crafted sauces and accoutrements! Beers in here are tremendous! I had one that was salt and lime flavoured and I think it was the first place I tried jubel. Cannae knock a place with a beer fridge. Super friendly staff, warm and inviting atmosphere, and big tables for large groups! Highly recommend for a night out. Cheers ;)”
