About Ubiquitous Chip

Ubiquitous Chip is a Scottish restaurant on Ashton Ln in Glasgow, split between a fine-dining restaurant downstairs and a brasserie upstairs. The downstairs restaurant offers an 8-course tasting menu. Upstairs, the brasserie serves small plates, and the bar area takes orders for bar snacks, with craft ales at the bar but no cask ales. A real fire sits in the grate in the bar area. On Sundays the brasserie runs a 2-course roast menu. Before dinner, guests can have champagne on the rooftop. Reservations are required, and dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often come for the upstairs Brasserie's small plates, praising flavour combinations that keep things interesting. The venison kofta with mint sauce, a tomato salad and a lamb Sunday roast are singled out as tasty or delicious, and one tasting menu diner calls the starter and main fantastic. Portion size is the recurring complaint. Several say the plates and tasting courses were tiny, with one diner still hungry enough to want fish and chips afterward, and others calling the cost too high for what arrives. One reviewer found the fish tacos dry with chewy tortillas, and described the vegan choices as chips, carrot salad and vegan haggis. Service divides. One diner reports being forgotten during a Valentine's Day tasting menu and asking twice for the bill, and another says the booking date had been recorded wrongly, while others call the staff friendly, knowledgeable and excellent. The bar staff earn praise for guiding wine and craft ale choices, and one visitor describes bar snacks beside a real fire in the grate on a cold January afternoon.

“Midweek lunchtime there’s a choice of either dining at the Brasserie or selecting a couple of small plates from the bar (both upstairs). There’s a good choice of craft ales but alas no cask ales anymore. The excellent bar staff will assist if in doubt as what to order. Call in - you’ll enjoy your visit.”

“We visited for the taster menu, one meat & one vegetarian. We booked based on the menu on the website and unfortunately, that was not the menu we got on the night. Nothing on the website suggests the menu is a sample menu. Such a shame as the dishes on that menu were what made us book in the first place! We stayed anyway as we were only visiting glasgow for the day and didn't have time to find somewhere else. The food was very nice but portions were incredibly small. We've not had a taster menu meal before so not sure if this is typical, but at £80 each and for 8 courses, I didn't expect to leave still hungry. Some of the things served were different to the printed menu we had as well ( I got soda bread but menu said sourdough, vegetarian courgette dish was supposed to have fermented grains but had a minted pea and bean topping instead. etc) For the price, we felt a little bit disappointed to be honest. Cutlery covered in water marks, no spoon given with consomé, the butter with the vegetarian first course was rock solid and impossible to spread. I appreciate these are all small things, but when you pay £200 for a 2 person meal, details really matter and add to the overall experience. The staff serving us were friendly and knowledgeable.”

“First time visitor to this well known institution but to be honest it was a pretty average experience at best. We got off to a bad start as they couldnt trace our booking and had gotten the date wrong, but luckily we were accomodated on spec as we had travelled through from Perth. We dined upstairs in the Brasserie which has a rustic wood and botanical theme with pretty fairy lights and a nice view. Be warned. The small plates at approx £15 each are extremely small. The two small pieces of venison kofta were very tasty and rich with a lovely mint sauce but it strangely came without pitta or bread or salad and was very small despite the £15 price. I ordered fish tacos to add to those but they were also tiny, dry, tasteless and the tortillas were chewy, they did not seem fresh. We"d had trouble finding anything interesting on the vegan menu for my friend despite the servers best attempts to accommodate us so I didnt want to add to the experience and return the tacos. We had asked at time of booking and they confirmed they had vegan options so booked accordingly but when we looked at the menu it was mainly a choice of tatties, chips, carrot salad and vegan haggis or bread, hardly inspiring for the reputation and price. With a little more imagination it would have been simple to make a nice tofu or a decent veg or mushroom dish sourced locally maintaining the Scottish produce menu theme. The brasserie was very nice but the food is so underwhelming and overpriced for what you get it does feel like the restaurant is somewhat resting on its reputation but failing to live up to it. I do appreciate times are tough for the hospitality trade but the term style over substance springs to mind and we are not really motivated to make a return visit.”

“We had the best birthday/honeymoon dinner at this restaurant. The service was phenomenal, the food – even better! Highly recommend!”

“We have been wanting to try Ubiquitous Chip for so long and it did not dissappoint. Few things to note: They have the Brasserie upstairs and the Restaurant section downstairs. Restaurant is a bit more fine dining style with higher prices whereas upstairs is more like experimental small plates. On sundays Brasserie has a Sunday Roast menu. So if you are wanting to try the usual Brasserie menu or not feeling like roast, make sure to go another day! We had the sunday roast, 2-course for £35. I had an amazing tomato salad for starters and lamb roast for main. Everything was delicious and the portions were quite big. Service and the ambiance were all great. I would have liked a bigger cocktail menu from the bar but there were a few specials available. I would totally recommend a visit but make sure you book for the right space and the right menu!”
