Customer Review Summary
Reviewers return most for the Sunday roast and carvery, with one diner calling the trio of beef topside, belly pork and chicken the nicest roast they have had, and others praising the Yorkshire pudding, thick gravy, crispy potatoes and cauliflower cheese. Close behind are the buffet at a wake and a 50th party, and dishes such as the steak and ale pie, seafood pasta, lamb shank, goat cheese salad and the cakes. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly, and the old building and the garden with its children's play area draw regular mentions. The main criticism is inconsistency. One carvery visit brought beef so tough it was barely chewable and dry, overcooked chicken, though the veg and gravy were liked. Another reviewer found the barman poor after being charged the same for half pints as for a full pint of coke and blackcurrant soda. One roast diner also wanted more bitters, since the only Old Speckled Hen on offer was gluten free. Another visitor describes a family meal in the garden that ended with an ice cream trio and sorbet trio.

“Nice venue and decent parking but staff and in particular one barman not great. Charged me £6 for a pint of coke and a blackcurrant soda once; then asked for the same again but had only 1/2 pint glasses which was fine but then charged me the same. Said it was must have been undercharged the first time. Heard him saying short of customers, I’m not overly surprised with his attitude. Food was decent and reasonably priced but service poor.”

“Great carvery. More like a home cooked roast. Generous portions, crispy potatoes, lovely roast veg, cauliflower cheese and fresh crisp greens. Friendly staff.”

“A lovely atmosphere, friendly waitress, good service overall, the only thing that let the carvery down today was the meat, the beef was so tough I had difficulty cutting it so sadly I only had about 3 mouthfuls overall was not chewable. The chicken was very dry and overcooked and not succulent at all . We didn't complain at the time as they were very busy but thought we should feed back for future reference! A lovely selection of veg, delicious gravy and plenty of condiments available, sadly your meat let you down today”
