About The Chevalier Inn - JD Wetherspoon
The Chevalier Inn is a Wetherspoon pub at 81-82 Fore St in Exeter, spread over multiple floors. The upper floor opens onto a sun deck overlooking Exeter, which gives groups a place to drink in the open air above the street. On the second floor, a large pull-down screen shows sports. The bar runs a changing selection of real ales, and the kitchen serves straightforward pub food alongside them. The pub takes walk-ins. Downstairs is the quieter part of the building, and a real fire burns there.

Customer Review Summary
The upper floor draws the most mention, with a balcony, sun deck and top-floor garden giving views over Exeter, plus a pull-down screen for watching sport. Close behind is quick service. Several describe drinks and hot food arriving fast and staff working hard, and one long-time visitor was shocked that tables were cleared instantly after years of sticky surfaces and slow drinks. Reviewers also mention a real fire downstairs, a quieter ground floor, plenty of seating, clean tables, good value, and pints of Kopparberg and Raspberry Cider. Criticism is mixed. One reviewer found it the noisiest Wetherspoons they had visited, with loud music and a packed room, and an ice cream arrived completely melted. Another found staff less than helpful and the food and drinks only okay. One reviewer says they were sent a photo of a dog tied up outside and that staff had not acted on concerns raised. Another reviewer watched England's first game of the 2026 World Cup there and describes a great atmosphere.

“Went out for a few pre drinks at the Chev like we also do. Good beer, good price, good staff! Kateline was working which was great because that means quick service with a side of banter, we might even get a cheeky grin from her! A credit to the establishment.”

“I am absolutely disgusted to be sent a photo of a dog tied up outside your pub presumably by one of your customers because the pub isn’t dog friendly. I have been told by one of your customers that people have mentioned their concerns to the customer but also to staff as well but nothing has been done. Looks like you are not dog friendly which is fair enough but being cruel and negligent by serving a customer knowing a dog is left tied up outside is another thing.”

“Spoons in the heart of Exeter main street. Large TV screen (pull down version) to watch sports on 2nd floor. 2nd floor has outside area for food and drinks. Downstairs area quieter. Great atmosphere. Recommend.”
