Quick info
About Singapore Coffee House
Singapore Coffee House is a kopitiam-style coffee shop in Edinburgh, at 5 Canonmills. Its menu takes Singaporean and Malaysian cooking and gives it a Scottish twist. The nasi lemak pairs chicken marinated in lemongrass with rice cooked in coconut milk, and a vegetarian version is also available. Laksa comes with a seafood option, and kaya toast rounds out the plates built around those flavours. Orders come out quickly. The room has four tables with two chairs each, so a wait is common when it gets busy. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Nasi lemak is the dish reviewers raise most, with the chicken marinated in lemongrass, the coconut rice and the vegetarian version all singled out, though one finds the chicken a little salty. Close behind are the kopi, the flaky roti canai and the Hong Kong toast, with kaya toast, murtabak, gua bao and a homemade XO sauce also named. Several describe the flavours as authentic to Singapore, and a few who lived there say it satisfied their cravings. The laksa draws mixed views: one calls the seafood broth very flavourful, while another finds the broth lacking coconut sambal depth and the noodles closer to ramen. The recurring caveat is space. With only four small tables, several mention queues or a full room by 9:30, and one suggests arriving early. Staff are described as friendly and sweet, and orders come out fast, with one reviewer served roti canai and kopi almost as soon as they sat down.

“Had been craving Kaya toast and Kopi since my travels to Singapore and this place did not disappoint. The girls working there are always so sweet and the food comes out fast. Expect to queue but it’s so worth it.”

“Coming from Singapore, it is often difficult to find truly authentic Singaporean or Malaysian flavours in the UK. But discovering Singaporean Coffee House was a pleasant surprise and definitely reassured me that I can satisfy those cravings when they hit. The flavours are not exactly the same as back home, but they come close enough to do the job. We ordered the laksa, nasi lemak and bandung. The nasi lemak stood out, they used the right chilli, the chicken was marinated in lemongrass, and the rice was cooked with coconut milk. It was really good. The laksa, however, has some room for improvement. The broth does not quite have that rich coconut sambal depth you would expect, and the noodles felt a bit different, almost like ramen at times. Overall, though, it is a solid spot and definitely worth a visit if you are craving a taste of home.”

“Lovely little restaurant. It only has four tables so there might be a little waiting time, but it’s definitely worth it. It’s a quick service so it won’t take too long either. The veg nasi lemak was incredible, the roti was sooo flakey and the kopi was just perfect.”

“Scottish breakfast with a Singaporean twist. It was really delicious and the kopi is a must try. The place has limited places and the stuff is really friendly.”
