About Deacon's House Cafe
Deacon's House Cafe is a coffee shop in Edinburgh at 304 Lawnmarket, on the Royal Mile near Edinburgh Castle. The cafe occupies a building that was once home to Deacon Brodie, and wall murals inside tell the story of Brodie and of Jekyll and Hyde. The kitchen bakes fruit and cheese scones, served warm, and the tea time offer pairs tea with a scone, clotted cream and jam. Savory options include a haggis sandwich, along with toasted sandwiches and a daily soup served with sourdough bread. Orders are placed at the counter by table number, and food is brought to the table. The room can get busy at peak times, with a short wait for a table.

Customer Review Summary
Scones draw the most praise, from a fruit scone described as crispy outside and warm and soft inside to a cheese scone called soft, warm and crumbly. One visitor called the tea time of tea, scone, clotted cream and jam delicious and returned nine days later. Close behind, reviewers single out the tomato and basil soup, the haggis sandwich, pancakes with bacon and maple syrup, and a smoked salmon bagel. Several describe kind, quick service, and a few mention the wall murals telling the story behind Jekyll and Hyde. The complaints are specific. One diner found the full cooked breakfast's scrambled eggs watery and uncooked, thought American style bacon odd alongside haggis sausage, said the waiter seemed unbothered, and was not given a full refund for the uneaten meal. That diner also found the cappuccinos cold. Another said the coffee was not hot, though staff warmed it up, and one marked down service because every extra drink means returning to the counter. Another reviewer's half eaten scone fell, and it was replaced without charge.

“We found it by accident while wandering Edinburgh. We waited less than 5 min for a table before being seated with menus. You order (by table number) and pay at the counter, and the food is delivered. We experienced "Tea Time" for the first time. Tea, scone, clotted cream and jam. DELICIOUS!! We loved it so much we went back on our return to Edinburgh 9 days later. Thank you from Canada 🇨🇦...forever a wonderful memory.”

“A nice option for a reasonably priced lunch, with both indoor and outdoor seating. There was a slight queue when we arrived and we waited a few minutes for a table inside, but the food came out pretty quickly once we had ordered. We had the Haggis sandwich and daily soup (tomato and basil) with sourdough bread. The soup was particularly good, and overall we found the food to be good value. The building has an interesting history, having originally been home to Deacon Brodie in the 18th century. Brodie reportedly lived a double life as a respected councillor by day and a thief by night, and is said to have inspired Robert Louis Stevenson’s Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. You order and pay at the till inside. Overall, a pleasant place for a casual lunch with a good choice of seating.”

“Deacon’s House Cafe, we were visiting the Edinburgh Castle, wanted to have coffee and little bite. We stopped to get the Flat White Late, Americano with Berries & Raisin filled Scone, Avocado Toast with smoked Salmon, and Ciabatta Sandwich filled Vegetables & Hummus and sales on the side. The service is good not great but the food was fresh and right out of the oven. The coffee was not hot as expected, still they wormed up a little more.”

“Fantastic cafe tucked to the side of the royal mile. The pancakes with bacon & maple syrup were amazing. Only marked down a star on service as you have to go up and order at the counter, especially if you decide you'd like another drink. But a very nice place for breakfast, thank you.”
