About Sweetland Cafe

Breakfast anchors the menu at Sweetland Cafe, a coffee shop and ice cream shop on Leith Walk in Edinburgh. The full breakfast arrives with toast and a glass of juice, with orange, apple or cranberry to choose from, and coffee comes alongside the food. The sweet side brings Marlenka honey and walnut cake for anyone stopping in for cake and a cappuccino rather than a meal, while the ice cream counter turns out sundaes and cold drinks through the day. There is no booking, so tables are taken as customers arrive. A step-free entrance keeps the room reachable for visitors with mobility needs, high chairs suit families with young children, and dogs are welcome inside. Seating outdoors gives the option of eating in the open air. The cafe opens daily.

Customer Review Summary

Breakfast is the main draw at this Leith Walk cafe, with the full breakfast singled out most, its black pudding called spectacular and the meal coming with a choice of juice and toast. Reviewers also name the Salmon Breakfast, the Sausages with Mash, a baked potato with cheese and the haggis as favourites, and several point to good value, particularly on the breakfast sandwiches. Close behind is the sweet side, where the Marlenka walnut and honey cake, the sundaes, the milkshakes and the mango twist smoothies get repeated praise. Nearly every reviewer calls the staff friendly, with a few describing them as quick, welcoming and accommodating, and one says the kitchen happily made eggs fried instead of scrambled. Reviewers describe the place as spacious, comfortable and clean, and one says it doesn't try to be something it isn't. The only complaint is a single note that a wee bit too much salt was sprinkled on top of one breakfast.

“I came off an ordeal of a train ride (2 hours late) and crashed into this cafe for sustenance. I got a baked potato with cheese. It was so pleasant and I cannot wait to go back, the staff were attentive, and the low prices were so welcome having come from London. It’s unassuming and earnest, doesn’t try to be something it’s not.”

“This café was such a lovely find while we were away for the weekend! We ordered the full breakfast and it did not disappoint. The black pudding was absolutely spectacular, one of the best I’ve had. The breakfast also came with a choice of orange, apple, or cranberry juice, plus toast, making it excellent value for money. The staff were friendly, welcoming, and happy to help, which made the experience even better. Great food, generous portions, and wonderful service. We’d definitely return if we’re back in the area!”

“Nice food and friendly staff. Doesn’t try too hard to be something it isn’t. Good value for money, particularly on the breakfast sandwiches. Great for veggies.”

“This has become one of my favorite cafes in all of Edinburgh. The staff are SO friendly and helpful. They're quick and efficient. I come here more than I'd like to admit for their treats. The Marlenka walnut and honey cake is to die for. Their sundaes are also absolutely amazing. I usually get a cappuccino, Cesar salad, and a sweet treat. I always feel so welcome every time I come here and I'm going to miss this cafe when our vacation is over.”
  • Claire Owen
“This cafe shone like an oasis through the rainy window of a tram running to Edinburgh. We'd been craving crepes, and we're so glad we hopped off to visit. Such a cute cafe, friendly staff and tasty treats. Thanks so much x”
