About Platform 41 Coffee

Platform 41 Coffee works as a weekday coffee shop on Leith Street in Edinburgh, serving over the counter to walk-in customers with no bookings taken. The house "hot Italian" spicy panini is the repeat order, sitting within a wider run of sandwiches, ciabattas and rolls made on a range of breads, while toasted croissants arrive with chutney alongside. Coffee runs the other half of the offer, from lattes and cappuccino to chai, and a case of cakes and traybakes covers carrot cake, millionaire's shortbread and lemon and bakewell tarts. Seating inside is limited, so plenty of orders leave the counter to be eaten off site. A step-free entrance means visitors with mobility needs can get in without steps, and dogs are welcome in with their owners. The shop trades during the daytime from Monday to Friday and stays shut across Saturday and Sunday.

Customer Review Summary

Sandwiches and paninis lead the praise, with the hot Italian panini named by two reviewers as packed with flavour. Close behind are the toasted croissant with chutney, called divine, and a lemon pepper chicken and goats cheese filling. Coffee draws steady approval too, from a quad latte and a cappuccino to lattes where the mix was spot on, and one reviewer calls the chai perfect. Sweet items get their own mentions, including carrot cake, millionaires shortbread, lemon tart and bakewell tart. Staff are described as friendly, kind and jolly, and reviewers call the room cosy and welcoming, with good music noted by one. The only concern is one reviewer's worry that getting a seat could be hard in such a wee place. One reviewer notes that staff call regulars by name, and another felt like a local on a first visit.

“My favorite breakfast place in Edinburgh… I love the passion, the service and the quality of food. It’s a big recommendation!!”
  • Andrew McAdams
“I read the handful of less than five star reviews, and those were silly. This place is deservedly five stars. Don’t let the “coffee” brand fool you though. The sandwiches are superior, and aim for getting the toasted croissant with the chutney. As I type, I’m waiting to see whether my wife will finish her half of the sandwich or I will have my patience rewarded. Also, the carrot cake was superb. Luckily I was able to eat most of that. Finally, we had lattes, and the mix was spot on. Congratulations to this place, and I wish you success in your endeavors.”

“High expectations having seen 5*s and wasn't disappointed. When I walked in I was immediately and warmly greeted by all the staff in there, so much so I felt like a local. Food and coffee was delicious, location was perfect, but the friendly staff really made it. Thanks!”

“I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS PLACE! If you are in Edinburgh this needs to be for sure a stop to have an amazing coffee and food. I got my perfect quad latte and the Italian spicy was out of this world. They have an amazing atmosphere and staff. You can sense how great they are when you see locals and personal calling clients by their name. Super recommended!!”
