About KUL COFFEE

KUL COFFEE is a coffee roastery in Edinburgh, at 15 Elm Row, with a kitchen that serves a brunch menu alongside the coffee. Crème brûlée french toast sits on that menu next to Turkish eggs, which come with yogurt and a poached egg on toast. The bakery side is made in-house and rotates, with Basque cheesecake among the items. Weekends are laptop free, a house rule meant to foster community among the people sharing the tables. The kitchen and the roasting come from the same business, so the coffee and the food are produced under one roof. KUL COFFEE is open daily, daytime only.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often return for the crème brûlée French toast, which several praise alongside the Turkish eggs, though one finds the custard overwhelms the toast and another says the Turkish breakfast was mostly Greek yogurt, one poached egg and plain white toast. Close behind are the tiramisu, called the best in Edinburgh by one diner and "terrible" by another who found it nothing like mascarpone, and the baked goods, including a warm cinnamon roll, a rhubarb and custard bun and Basque cheesecake. Coffee draws steady praise, from an iced strawberry matcha latte to espresso tonic and pour overs, though one husband found his cappuccino watery. Staff are described as friendly and upbeat. Complaints about the kitchen recur: overcooked poached eggs on avocado toast with no runny yolk, a sandwich that arrived slightly burned with a black hair in it, and a nearby dog shaking fur and saliva around. Some note it gets loud when busy, and one reviewer says the bread runs out after the early afternoon. One reviewer wished for more bread slices to sop up the Turkish eggs.

“Kul Coffee is easily one of my favourite coffee spots in Edinburgh. The speciality coffee is beautifully crafted, the service is warm and welcoming. If you're visiting, I'd definitely recommend trying the rhubarb & custard bun and the Basque cheesecake—they're both excellent and pair perfectly with the coffee. A fantastic coffee shop that I'd happily return to again and again. Highly recommended if you're looking for great coffee in Edinburgh.”

“This places makes no sense. It’s too good! They make their own pastries, rotate them every so often, and the brunch menu they have is unbelievable. Coffee is also great and reliable. Wish they had a guest espresso to change once in a while. I believe they did but stopped as the owner had a child! Hopefully now they can bring another type since they have a +1 roaster in the family :D.”

“One of the best coffee/brunch spots in Edinburgh. Quickly become my favourite local spot! Great atmosphere, knowledgeable team. Great coffee and amazing food. You can’t go wrong with any of their brunch menu staples or their baked goods. Not more you can want from a coffee shop!”

“I have mixed feelings about this place. I really enjoyed the cappuccino, but my husband didn’t. He thought it was too watery. We ordered the avocado toast, and it was decent overall. However, the poached egg was overcooked and the yolk wasn’t runny. Our friend ordered another toast with some unusual toppings but didn’t finish it. The eggs on his dish were overcooked as well. There was also a dog sitting nearby that kept shaking itself, and saliva and fur were flying around, which made the experience less enjoyable.”

“KUL is always delicious; the Turkish eggs and the crème brûlée french toast are absolutely fantastic. They have a wide range of very nice pour overs, and one of the best espresso tonics I’ve had in Edinburgh - service is also very attentive and upbeat, which makes potential wait times less long. If anything, it’d be great to get more slices of bread for the Turkish eggs; it’s so good that I need to sop up every last bit! :) Also - when it gets busy, it can be quite loud, but takeaway is always an option!”
