Customer Review Summary
Coffee is the main draw, with reviewers praising a punchy espresso, a flat white, a matcha whisked properly and a filter coffee with bright, clean acidity. Close behind are the bakes, including banana bread, a cardamon roll, a cinnamon bun, carrot cake and a salted chocolate brownie. A carrot, beetroot and hummus ciabatta and avo on sourdough also get praise. Service divides opinion. Several describe friendly, knowledgeable staff, while others report a barista at the till who seemed reluctant, no friendly closing exchange, and a "we don't normally do that" reply to a request for weak coffee. A few found the cortado and another coffee lukewarm, and indoor seating is described as limited. One party of three says they were given a two-seater and told not to pull up a chair. One reviewer found a pre-made baguette dense and dry and a Pain Suisse stringy, and left most of both. Another found the pastrami baguette very cold but still liked the flat white.

“Fabulously attentive staff. Very knowledgeable about the coffee selections. Happy to recommend the beans for my delicious double espresso. The flavour profile described by Eliana was spot on. The salted chocolate brownie was just yummy and complemented my espresso to perfection. Great, busy cafe with a modern edge serving amazing specialty coffee.”

“Don’t go if fat or a party with an odd number. They prefer 2 or 4 people in a party for table capacity usage (made you feel very unwelcome and that 3 people was an inconvenience to them), food was lovely but ruined by ethos of seating requirements. They’re more bothered about potential customers than their actual customers, I was told to go elsewhere if i didn’t want a coffee. (It was going to be my next drink order after we’d ordered cups of tea, sandwiches and cakes for lunch, but then felt I didn’t want to spend anymore money there after the staff rudeness and only providing one table for three people to put all of their drinks and food on) I was also asked not to pull up a chair for me to sit on and I firmly declined their view due to my size, my parties size and my requirement to be able to eat my food from the two seater table allocated for 3 people) Shame, would never go again and would never recommend.”

“We ordered a coffee latte and sandwich baguette which was Rock hard, first bite into it and my gums started bleeding. Lowdown was a let-down tbh.”

“This is a nice little coffee shop and cafe on George Street. They have indoor and outdoor seating, offering a simple menu of coffees, non-coffee drinks along with a few sweet and savoury food items. We popped in recently and were served a very good carrot, beetroot and hummus on ciabatta and a delicious slice of carrot cake to go along with two very nicely prepared macchiato coffee drinks. Service was very friendly, prices reasonable for what was served. Environs nice at Lowdown. This is a good, urban coffee shop that we'd gladly return to if we find ourselves back in Edinburgh.”

“Seeking an idyll upon arriving in Edinburgh, I decided to bring my girlfriend to LOWDOWN. Being our first time in the rustic capital of Scotland, our preliminary impressions were boosted by the exceptional quality of the food, coffee, and service with which we were met at this little nook! The espresso was punchy and just the right blend of acidity and fragrance; my girlfriend's matcha was phenomenal, and demonstrated a real craftsmanship. Her aubergine sandwich was flavourful, but I believe the real star was the cardamon roll! Needless to say, we would both heartily recommend this place for the discerning Edinburgh traveller!”
