About Eyden's

Baked jacket potatoes anchor the menu at Eyden's, a coffee shop on Portobello High Street in Edinburgh, served with fillings including tuna mayo, chilli con carne, avocado and coleslaw alongside a side salad. Breakfast and lighter plates run beside them, from porridge with granola and berry compote to pancakes, paninis and avocado toast, with a soup of the day such as lentil. Cappuccinos and Americanos come from the coffee side, and orders are settled at the till rather than at the table. The room holds roughly ten tables, with the kitchen and dining area sharing the same space, so booking ahead is advised. Dogs are welcome inside, which suits walkers coming off the beach, and a step-free entrance means visitors with mobility needs can get in without steps. High chairs are on hand for families with young children. A covered counter holds cakes and brownies, with some labelled gluten free and polenta. The doors open daily.

Customer Review Summary

The baked potato draws the most repeat praise, with reviewers singling out a tuna mayo version called creamy and well presented and a three filling plate of chilli con carne, avocado and coleslaw described as generous and fresh. Close behind sit the coffee, called strong and good by several, and the porridge with granola, berry compote and fresh fruit, which one visitor rated the best they had eaten. Others mention the lentil soup, the pancakes, the smoked salmon, dill and crème fraîche panini and the peanut butter brownie, though a couple found the brownies cold and overpriced. Staff are often described as welcoming, and several note dogs are allowed after a beach walk. The complaints are specific: a forgotten tea order followed by a steak pie with a hash brown sized serving of mash, a lemon blueberry cake found dry, a sweltering room with the front door propped open, and being left standing at the till while staff chatted. One reviewer reports out of date mayonnaise and a later upset stomach, with no remake or reimbursement offered, and suggests checking the condiments.

“I’m really disappointed that I have to give a poor review as we were so hopeful. Dog friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Ordered two teas and two steak pies. Waited quite a while for the cups, then nothing. Tried several times to attract waiter, eventually I caught his eye and gestured T, he was sorry but he’d forgotten. (3 tables occupied). Brought the tea with apologies. Fine. Then the pie and mash arrived. Smallest mash serving I’ve ever had, it was the size and depth of a hash brown. Pie was clearly bought in and contained two pieces of meat the size of a dice. I did tell him and he said he’d tell the owner. A wasted £30.”

“Second time in this cafe and confirmed the good impression of the first time! I ordered a baked potato with grated cheese, salad and tuna mayo! It was excellent! Creamy, tasty and well presented.”

“We ate here for lunch and everything was delicious! Quaint restaurant where the service was great. My son had the smoked salmon, Dill & Crème Fraiche panini, which was actually 2 paninis. My wife had the chicken Caesar salad. I had the avocado toast with ricotta, as well as the oat porridge, almond flakes, granola, fresh fruits, chia seeds, berry compote, with maple syrup. All our meals were delicious! My porridge may have been the best I'd ever eaten. I highly recommend dining here, you won't be dissapointed.”

“The atmosphere is very nice, i love the music because it's more loud, but like a silent companion for lovely lunch or breakfast. I ordered the soup of the day, which was very tasty and vast. They have an art exhibition for Karina Woldt, which is also a nice touch. The porridge was also very tasty, and the fruit seemed fresh. I would come back for sure. It has around 10 tables, but it doesn't feel crowded.”

“Baked potato with a choice of 3 fillings was really good, chilli con-cane, avocado, & coleslaw . Generous portions including the side salad .. everything was very fresh.”
