About Holyrood Coffee Shop

On 1 Holyrood Rd, Holyrood Coffee Shop is a coffee shop and breakfast restaurant serving morning rolls throughout the day. The breakfast roll comes loaded with Lorne sausage, fried egg, haggis and bacon, while another option pairs a tattie scone with link sausage and brown sauce, both customizable with additions like hash browns. Smoothies are blended from pure fruit with no added sugar or syrup, and sandwiches and bagels are offered for lunch. Service is walk-in, with no reservations taken, and the shop opens daily during daytime hours only. Takeaway is available for those eating off site. The space itself is small, suiting quick stops rather than long stays.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers return most for the breakfast morning rolls, singling out the Lorne sausage, egg, haggis and bacon roll, and a tattie scone and link sausage roll with brown sauce that one reviewer says cures any hangover. Close behind is the option to add hash browns to a roll, available all day, which one visitor says they visited every day of their stay for. Several mention a smoothie described by staff as pure blended fruit with no added sugar, though that same reviewer found the breakfast itself only okay. Staff come up repeatedly as friendly and helpful, including one who was considerate about a food allergy and another who plays rock music. The place is described as small and cosy, with fair prices for the location. A few mention its spot just off the Royal Mile and takeaway. The recurring complaints are minor: one reviewer notes strong cooking smells when the kitchen gets busy, and another wished coffee were included in the breakfast price. One reviewer says the food was served promptly, and another says it arrived warm with a smile.

“Five stars for a fantastic spot to rest or work. I escaped there for lunch mid conference and the powernap gave me the power to finish the day. The staff were lovely too :)”

“Brilliant wee cafr, been going for years. Fair prices for the location, quality food and the owners are very nice people. Cannot recommend this little cafe more if i tried (Tattie scone and link sausage on a roll with brown sauce will cure any hangover)”

“Absolute banger of a find for morning rolls. Loved that you could add hash browns, which wasn't something I saw at any of the other shops with morning rolls, and you could get them all day! Super customizable options, the employees were super nice, and the vibes in the shop were cozy and vibrant. Literally came here every day of our stay in town. Lol”
  • Anna Derakhshesh
“I have food allergies, and they were honestly very responsible and considerate about it, which I really appreciated. The café vibe is great, super chill. If you're looking for a cute place with a nice view to enjoy your food, this is a lovely spot. And if you're into rock music, you'll enjoy it even more - the girl working there is a rock fan and plays great music. We were genuinely satisfied and had a really good time.”
