Quick info
About Zaza's Coffee House
On Grassmarket in Edinburgh, Zaza's Coffee House is a coffee shop serving a fully halal menu, with turkey bacon used in place of pork in its Scottish breakfast. The full Scottish breakfast, often ordered alongside haggis and a tattie scone, anchors the menu, and a house bagel with egg, bacon, and cheese is also available. Coffee, including a chai latte, runs alongside the breakfast items. The shop operates on a walk-in basis with no booking needed, and it opens daily. A step-free entrance suits visitors with mobility needs, and high chairs are available for families with young children. Inside, there is a view of Edinburgh Castle, also visible from outside the shop. Dine-in orders cost £1 more per item than the same order taken away.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often return to the full Scottish breakfast, praised as well prepared and filling, with halal haggis and tattie scones singled out by several first-time haggis eaters. Close behind is the fully halal menu, which diners repeatedly cite as the reason they came, including turkey bacon for an English breakfast. Others mention a gluten-free breakfast platter, breakfast bagels, a chai latte and tasty coffee, and the view of Edinburgh Castle comes up again and again. Many describe the staff as friendly and accommodating, and one notes food arriving quickly. The complaints centre on the counter staff and owner. Several reviewers describe an unwelcoming reception: one was told to leave while looking at the menu, another was asked repeatedly where a husband was and warned the table would be given away while the food was still not ready, and one reports a half burnt pancake. A family who ordered takeaway describes being told off for sitting in, without the extra charge for dining in being explained, and says they felt treated differently. One reviewer's close note is that the food came with a lovely castle view.

“Very disappointing experience. The staff, especially the man at the counter, were extremely rude and unwelcoming. My mother has difficulty walking, so after ordering coffee and cheesecake, we waited for the toilet because there is only one available and several other customers were also waiting. During this time, the man and another member of staff kept staring at us in a way that made us feel very uncomfortable. As a Pakistani/Desi family, we genuinely felt we were being treated differently. We had ordered our food as takeaway because we were not aware that dining in costs £1 extra per item. While waiting for the toilet, the man told us to move and not stand there, so we sat down instead. He then approached my cousin and said that we had ordered takeaway but were sitting inside. If the dining-in charge had been explained to us when we ordered, we would have been happy to pay the extra £1. Instead of politely informing us, the staff chose to stare at us and speak to us rudely, which made the whole experience very unpleasant. Good customer service is about communicating respectfully. Unfortunately, we did not feel welcome, and because of the way we were treated, we will not be returning.”

“Food: Excellent, halal, had to try the haggis! Atmosphere: Busy but didn't have to wait for a table, relaxed atmosphere in a great location with great views of the castle. Service: Excellent, didn't have to wait too long for the freshly made breakfast Shaxos Travel on YT for short video”

“Had breakfast here this morning. As a first-time visitor to Edinburgh, I’d definitely recommend this spot if you’re looking for a halal breakfast. The food was great, the view was amazing, and you can even see Edinburgh Castle from the cafe!”
