Quick info
About Crown & Anchor
Crown & Anchor is a 16th century pub on Dell Quay Rd in Chichester, set on the waterside with views across Chichester Harbour. The kitchen builds its menu around fish and seafood, with oysters, scallop sliders and fish and chips among the dishes. Full pub meals are served inside, and a private dining room gives groups a space of their own. Dogs are welcome. Food and drinks are ordered through an app outside, while alcohol is ordered at the indoor bar, so guests do not wait for table service. The pub faces the water, which means the sunset is part of the outlook.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often return to the seafood. Scallops are named most, served as sliders or in roe butter, with oysters, turbot, mackerel, Cornish lemon sole and hake close behind, all described as fresh and delicious. Tobacco onion sticks and sourdough with seaweed butter also draw praise. The harbour views and sunsets come up repeatedly, and the staff are called friendly, with one party getting a birthday song and another finding a birthday postcard already on the table. Several suggest booking ahead. Complaints centre on value and format. One diner found only crab available and described the soft shell crab burgers as battered with very little meat, the fish burger as two goujons, and the chips as a handful. Another said the fish and chips came with no more than ten chips, dry mushy peas and very crispy batter. One reviewer disliked ordering through the app, which could not take alcohol orders and suggested a tip of almost 20%, and felt there was no real table service. That diner was given a full refund.

“After seeing lovely photos advertised on their Facebook we headed down with a 5pm reservation looking for oysters, prawns, scallops.. all that was available was crab so we chose two £26 each soft shell crab burgers, and a spicy fish burger again around the £26 mark. We found it easier to order drinks via the app as queues could be lengthy, and the food also. Staff were waiting on orders bringing them out, but there was no real table service. Cutlery had to be gotten yourself from a communal tub, which to me personally is off putting when you see people leaving the bathroom and not wash their hands.. The food arrived on a small metal tray with newspaper type paper, there was a handful of chips, the fish burger was two fish goujons, and the crab burgers resembled only what can be described as battered tarantulas from I’m a celebrity bush tucker trials.. there was no side salad or peas, and even when I tried to look for crab meat there was just enough to make a 10p piece. The suggestion of an almost 20% tip on the app was an insult. You also cannot order alcohol on the app, we were told we have to go indoors to the bar. The crab in the crab burgers honestly looked like they’ve been pulled out of the harbour next to the pub, same crabs as the kids catch while crabbing, and fried in batter.. The restrooms stunk to high heaven of urine in the ladies. The host was very receptive of my feedback at the time and did give us a full refund for what was asked. The pub I’m sure if pulled up together more formally could revenue massively more.”

“I’m sure they hear this everyday but what a beautiful setting! Amazing to watch the sunset! Very courteous staff, great gluten free options for anyone coeliac like us! And so many dogs to stroke! Highly recommend. James, Beth, Ernie and Frank x”

“An all round great experience. Fantastic restaurant in a beautiful location. The staff are not only pleasant, but take a great interest in you as well as what you order. The food is freshly cooked and I would recommend any of the fish dishes having dined here on two consecutive nights. Dont miss this little gem. Even when busy there is enough parking. If the weather is good why no dine outside.”

“I've been twice recently to this glorious pub with amazing views and food. Fantastic seafood, thoroughly enjoyed the fruits de mer, absolutely delicious. I had the fish of the day the first time, also delicious. There's definitely no where else like this locally. We parked at Fishbourne church and walked there, to avoid Wittering traffic. Beautiful walk through the meadows and coast. A true gem!”

“We had a fabulous lunch at the Crown & Anchor. It’s such a lovely setting, with fantastic food and genuinely friendly staff. We shared the scallops in roe butter to start, along with rosemary bread fresh from the oven, absolutely delicious! For our mains, I had the turbot and my guest chose the mackerel, both were perfectly cooked and full of flavours. To finish, my guest enjoyed an affogato and as a birthday treat the staff (joined by some fellow diners!) sang Happy Birthday. It was such a thoughtful touch that made the day even more special. We’ll both be dreaming of those scallops for some time to come. Highly recommended!”
