About The Traveller's Joy

The Traveller's Joy is a gastropub in Emsworth at 325 Main Rd, open daily, with a bar side for real ales and a separate restaurant side for food. Food orders go to the restaurant counter rather than the bar, so diners know where to place them. Basket meals come in large portions, which suits anyone arriving hungry. A Sunday roast beef with gravy is on the menu. The ploughman's comes with sausages and a chilli and tomato chutney.

Customer Review Summary

Generous portions anchor the praise, with diners describing a huge fish pie, a massive ploughman's with four sausages, and a steak burger with plenty of chips. Roast beef with loads of gravy, garlic cheese bread, fillet steak and sticky toffee pudding also earn compliments, as do skin on chips with cheese. Close behind are friendly staff, mentioned by hikers and regulars alike, and a garden with flowers and baskets that one returning visitor noticed after the change of ownership. A dog was fully welcome for one party. Complaints are scattered: one reviewer says a bar worker answered a polite greeting with a dirty look, another felt locals by the fireplace would not move aside, and a third was sent from one bar to another when trying to order food and left. One diner who praised the chutney was given some to take home.

“Not been since it's been taken over. Really impressed, switched the bar around, which has made a big difference. Garden is lovely with some nice flowers and baskets. New outdoor furniture as well. Made a huge difference. Staff very friendly and helpful. Will use it more now. 👍”

“Went here to have some food and drinks. Having never been here before we decided to try this place. We went in to ask if they were still serving food. We were told "yes" by the lady. She handed me a menu and said "please find a table and then when you decide what you want come back and order". We went outside and found a table and then went back to the same spot I did my enquiry. For then to be told they won't take my order here and I have to go to the other bar as this is a restaurant. To me it all looks the same an old fashioned pub. A restaurant has tablecloths and napkins and dressed tables. This had none of it. Kids running around etc. just like a pub not a restaurant. Went into the other part I couldn't get to the bar as people were sitting at the bar with stools. So no ordering of food for me. The family left and we drove a few minutes down the road to the Bosham inn. I spent over £300 in the Bosham inn that could have been in the Travellers Joy's till. I guess this place doesn't need the business in this climate. Word to the owner or management you need to look at what your doing and refocus.”

“Food absolutely brilliant, beer very good and the staff are excellent. Weve tried the afternoon and the evening and the atmosphere is a little too intense with the locals, who seem to take over. We had to walk along the fireplace to leave the pub this afternoon and the locals would not move for us. We felt we were in the way. What a shame for a lovely pub. We won't revisit again whilst we are here.”

“Popped in for a quick drink after a very long and hot hike….very welcome staff and atmosphere. I will definitely return and try their food too! Thank you from the t-shirt hiker!!”

“Comically RUDE! For absolutely no reason at all, the bar lady was laughably rude to me and my two friends at the bar. I asked very politely how she was, but was met with a dirty look and a "what do you want" !! 3 pints came to over £20. Nothing joyful about this place!”
