Customer Review Summary

Diners most often single out the food, with the pub's main dishes drawing praise for generous portions: beef brisket with mac and cheese, liver and bacon with mash and parsnip chips, venison steak, and a mixed grill pre-ordered for a large birthday party. Close behind are the puddings, where sticky toffee pudding and raspberry trifle with sherry get specific mentions. Others name the crispy squid, the risotto, a Boeuf Bourguignon pie and sea bass with fennel and cider sauce. Reviewers also describe a beautiful, characterful old country building with a fire going, friendly staff, and a quiet, calm atmosphere. A good selection of ales, gin, cocktails and wine is noted too. Dog owners mention lots of dogs and say it suits a stop after a long walk. The only caveat is that one reviewer says it is often very busy and recommends booking. Another says portions are big enough that anyone wanting pudding should plan for it. One reviewer, arriving after 8pm from a day at the races, was still seated and allowed to order a full meal.

“Went with some friends yesterday by someone recommending it. Absolutely beautiful in everyway. Staff were out of this world so so lovely, pub inside and out beautiful, food was delicious 😋 and even met the chef and thanked him for the amazing food. Will most definitely be going again and again 😁 thank you to you all. Owners are so lucky and must be so proud to own a place like that.”

“One word. Magical. Booked a last minute reservation here after a day at the races at Fontwell. They fitted us in with a beautiful table and allowed us to still order even though it was gone 8pm. The pub is absolutely beautiful and full of character, and the staff were so friendly and warm that we instantly felt at home. Then the food - I ordered the beef brisket which came with mac and cheese. Holy heck, it was mouthwatering! The rest of my party were similarly swept away by their food and if it hadn't be so late we'd have been seriously tempted by a dessert! We will definitely be back.”

“What a wonderful experience we had. We’ve recently got a puppy so wanted to start socialising him more, so we booked the George last minute from seeing the positive reviews. From start to finish everything was so lovely. Quiet calm atmosphere, great service, and food was superb. 10/10, will definitely be returning. Many thanks”

“Have driven past this past so many times and always wanted to stop and try so today we went to have a lunch for my wife’s birthday. There is a car park at the back and the place wasn’t too full. We had reserved a table it probably could have just turned up. The inside is a beautiful old style country pub, there was a fire going and all the tables were set up for service. I had the liver and bacon with mash and parsnip chips. For dessert I had raspberry trifle with sherry absolutely delicious 😋. We have been to a number of pubs around the Barnham area and this is by far the best of the best. Will definitely book another meal soon.”
