About Penny Blue Restaurant & Bar
On Warwick Rd in Carlisle, Penny Blue Restaurant & Bar runs an open kitchen so diners can watch the chef work through service. The menu of 29 dishes opens with starters like mushroom crostini, leek, greens and coconut soup, and haggis bon bons, alongside buffalo mozzarella and tomato salsa and a prawn and hot smoked salmon cocktail. Pan fried scallops also feature among the starters. Steaks appear as a recurring main course choice, and Sunday brings a roast with a variety of vegetables served alongside the meat. The restaurant takes walk-ins rather than reservations, and it opens Tuesday to Sunday, closing on Mondays. The open kitchen also sends cooking smells through the dining room as dishes go out.

Customer Review Summary
Haggis bon bons draw the strongest praise, called out as "out of this world" alongside a Sunday roast described as fresh with well cooked veggies. Scallops and Cumberland Sausage starters were also well received, and steaks came out perfectly cooked. One reviewer notes the starter menu felt limited, while another found the Saturday afternoon crowd varied.

“We had a fantastic experience having Sunday lunch here. Not usually a fan of Sunday roast but this one is something special. Really fresh ingredients, quality meat, all veggies cooked to perfection and overall really great flavor. Best roast I’ve had in the UK!”

“We had food here, it was delicious, you can see the chef at work cooking. The smells are wonderful. There were quite a few people dining when we were, which was a Saturday afternoon, so a varied atmosphere, but a different time of day or a group of people may have found it different. We would definitely dine again.”

“Absolutely shocking! The food was so bland, tasteless and poor quality. Would never go back and my wife was ill after eating here. We had to leave half the food and the waitress gave my wife the totally wrong dish before picking it up and just putting it on another customers table. Won’t be back for sure! Definitely needs to recruit new staff”

“Booked for a friend's birthday. Group of 8 of us, 7 of them had never been before. A few had starters - the Cumberland Sausage and Scallops were very well received! For mains, a couple had steak, 1 had salmon and the rest of us had the Penny Blue burger. All cooked to everyone's taste. The staff were amazing and were not flustered at all with all of our requests for drinks - felt like we kept them busy!! Big thanks to Nikole and Charlotte, brilliant service! The 7 of them that had not been before have all said they will definitely be back!”
