About Hiraeth
On Cowbridge Rd E in Cardiff, Hiraeth is a modern British restaurant built around tasting menus, with a dining room that looks over Victoria Park through large windows. The format runs from a lunch menu and a short set menu to six and seven course tasting menus, with à la carte options as well. Chicken tea with brioche and chicken-skin butter is a recurring dish, and the opening snacks include a mushroom tartlet. Peach with goats curd arrives as a dessert course. Wine pairings are optional, and a non-alcoholic wine and soft drink and mocktail list sits alongside them. The chefs and serving staff explain each course, vegan and non-meat versions of dishes are available, and allergies are accommodated. Reservations are required. Tables for two sit alongside larger tables, and a private dining room serves groups. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Diners most often single out the chicken tea, a brothy course with brioche and chicken-skin butter that several call perfect and that stays on the menu month after month. Close behind are the mushroom tartlet, the Swiss chard with kimchi and cheesy mash, and the peach with goats curd dessert. Others praise the cod, scallop, game pie and treacle tart. Reviewers describe tasting menus with detailed course explanations, some dishes brought out by the chef, and wine pairings and non-alcoholic pairings they found memorable. A vegan diner says the dishes did not feel like an afterthought, and others mention pre-arranged changes for non-meat eaters. The main criticism is portion size on the lunch menu: one reviewer found the starter more like a selection of snacks and the sea bass portion extremely small. Another wanted larger pieces of the Cornish mackerel and found the Welsh pork not quite fork tender. Others call the evening portions huge, with one full after four of six courses.

“Genuinely one of the best food experiences of my life. The menu is well crafted, balanced and more than enough. The chefs were very informative and you can tell they are passionate about what they're doong. Wine pairing is a must, they nailed this aspect as well, surprise to no one. Our waitress was very professional yet casual, making just the right amount of conversation whilst keeping the pace. I'll definitely come back for more😋”

“Top class food, excellent flavor combinations, all delivered with professional & friendly service at a fair price. Can’t see how they don’t get a Michelin ⭐️ 1. Chicken Tea; perfect, don’t change a thing 2. Tom Kha; a nice nod to the classic Thai soup. My personal preference would be a little bit spicier. 3. Cornish Mackerel; the quality/taste of the mackerel was superb, I really wanted more (larger pieces) 4. Welsh Pig; Excellent flavor profiles, let down very, very slightly by the pork not being as fork tender as it could have been. It was 8.5-10, where-as all other dishes were a 9 or 10 5. Peach with goats curd. The goats curd ganache was simply superb. 6. Treacle tart; perfectly executed. Really enjoyed an Elderflower 75 cocktail and a glass of the beautiful Yr Afanc from Dell Vineyards.”

“Fabulous high end restaurant opposite the park. Fresh and inventive dishes served as a guided tasting menu by chefs and serving staff who are knowledgable and enthusiastic. We ate the evening menu with a drinker and non-drinker. The pairing menu for wines was fabulous with some very different choices of region and bottles. This place also has a varied non-alcoholic wine menu that is the best we have yet tried and really worked, especially with the staff recommendations for which course to try each one with. Lovely atmosphere and definitely a great place for a special occasion or social event. We sat as a pair, but there were larger tables as well. Booking was essential and we will definitely return.”

“Amazing food here. The highlights of the 7 course taster menu was the chicken tea and the goats cheese curd with white chocolate and peach. Stunning!”
