About Heaneys Restaurant
Heaneys Restaurant is a modern British restaurant in Cardiff, at 6-10 Romilly Crescent, built around a tasting menu that changes monthly. Diners choose between a 7/8 course taster and a 10-course option, with the courses weighted towards fish and a wine pairing available alongside. Meals begin with sourdough and marmite butter. For a shorter meal, the kitchen also runs a five-course set lunch and an a la carte menu, and a roast dinner is part of the lineup too. A bar list of wines and cocktails rounds out the offer. Reservations are required. The kitchen also works with dietary needs such as allergies and lactose intolerance.

Customer Review Summary
Tasting menus draw most of the praise, with diners describing the long, short and monthly versions as delicious and packed with flavour. Cuttlefish noodles in broth is called a standout, and the sourdough with marmite butter won over a self-described marmite hater. Potato terrine, ox cheek, red mullet and a choux bun with a surprising mix of ingredients also get singled out. Several call the staff lovely, friendly and good at explaining the dishes. The criticism is milder and comes from a few reviewers. One Sunday lunch diner found the roast potatoes tough outside and slightly undercooked inside, the service routine, the entrance awkward with steps by the host podium, and the meal pricey for what it was. Another notes the tasting menu leans toward fish, and one wanted more beetroot with the lamb. Reviewers also describe the kitchen handling dietary needs. A walnut allergy meant the pickled walnut chutney was swapped for black garlic puree, and the waiter replaced the white wines in a pairing with a sparkling wine and an orange wine.

“We visited The Heaneys for our anniversary dinner and it absolutely lived up to expectations. Every dish was beautifully executed, packed with flavour, and showed a real level of sophistication and quality. The standout for me was the choux bun - surprising combination of ingredients, yet everything worked harmoniously together. Staff were also friendly and helpful so a 10/10 experience!”

“I and my husband decided to go to Tom Heaney's restaurant when we watched him on The Great British Menu. We are visiting Wales and we wanted to celebrate our anniversary dinner. It was the best food we both ever had. We opted for the menu of the month with wine pairing. Every dish on the menu was divine. Especially cuttlefish noodles in broth was just to die for. We could have just eaten that for the whole meal. I am allergic to walnuts so the chef subbed pickled walnut chutney with black garlic puree for cauliflower croquet. My husband tasted both and told me black garkic puree was even better. Also I requested no white wine for wine pairing. Our waiter Brendon got me sparkling wine from Sussex and Orange wine from Argentina as replacements. And both were fantastic. Even the pinot noir he got me for my red mullet entree was great. He definitely knows his wines. Cudos to him. Mezcal cocktail was delicious. All in all this was the best gourmet experience ever. When in Cardiff we highly recommend Heaney's.”

“Came here for a Sunday lunch, the food was of good quality with a delicious sourdough and marmite butter to start, the potatoes however were a bit tough on the outside and slightly undercooked on the inside. It would have been nice to have more greens to share as they were delicious. The service was not bad at all but felt a little routine and not particularly outstanding. The layout of the entrance and the hosts podium is a bit awkward with steps between the door you enter in and where you are greeted as there is seating on the lower part too and it doesn’t really flow very well. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. It felt a bit more pricy than what it was worth and felt a bit more of a regulars/locals type venue but we did enjoy our meal. It was located out of our way so we did travel there especially for the meal which maybe meant we had higher expectations than if we had just been in the area.”

“My girl and I had a tremendous birthday lunch comprising the Short Taster 7/8 course menu - we couldn't do the wine pairing as we were driving (cue violins). Each course was a delight - small plates as per a taster menu, each was packed full of flavour, impeccably cooked and an exciting experience. It's difficult to pick favourites so I won't - it was all fantastic. I thought the lamb dish needed more beetroot. The service was faultless, as is the decor. I'd prefer jazz on the playlist, but that's just a personal preference. Worth every penny.”
