Customer Review Summary
Reviewers return above all for the building itself, a former Victorian theatre that Wetherspoon restored, with ornate features and plenty of seating on the ground floor and upstairs. Close behind is the usual Wetherspoons menu, which several call good value, with real ales, vegetarian meals and a festive Christmas dinner singled out. Reviewers describe it as busy from early morning to late at night, especially at lunchtime, on evenings and on rugby international days. Food gets mixed reports. One visitor found two burgers overcooked, with barely any lettuce and very thin tomato, another called the "ultimate" burger basic with a Guinness that tasted like the lines needed cleaning, and others say the kitchen is nothing special. Service is split too: some call the staff friendly and say they were excellent late on a Sunday night, while others say staff are rushed and service was not great when it was packed. One visitor found the card payment process a pain, with a verification code and a mandatory email address after Apple Pay failed.

“Lovely pub for a drink or a meal. The food is the same as the menu at other Wetherspoons but cooked even more nicely - I had a lovely couple of vegetarian meals which I was very happy with (hence the 5*).”

“One of the best wetherspoons around, the service is always good & the atmosphere is always what you would expect for a city centre pub. This is a starting point for many people meeting up with friends for a solid night out. Nice decor & decent surroundings, well worth a visit for lunch, brunch or a night out.”

“The Prince of Wales is a fantastic building with plenty of character, having originally been an old theatre. There’s lots of seating and the surroundings are really impressive. It’s a Wetherspoons, so you know what to expect in terms of food and drinks. Unfortunately, the service wasn’t particularly great during my visit, although the pub was very busy at the time. Overall, a fascinating and impressive venue that’s definitely worth visiting for the building itself.”

“Magnificent Wetherspoon renovation of a once beautiful Victorian theatre that had slumped into disrepair and neglect. How the ornate interors survived over the years is a mystery. The surrounding buildings were all together horrible and dilapidated, some having been cinemas showing adult films for many years. The interior of the POW takes your breath away. This is apparently one of JDW biggest earners in the country. Well, the money was well spent. You have to see it to really appreciate the restoration. As for the food and service, it's everything you'd expect from a busy Spoons. That is, nothing special from the kitchen/grill and the staff are rushed off their feet. It's busy from early morning 'til late at night. I urge you to visit it for the building alone.”

“Fabulous building inhabited by the usual jdw quality products and lovely friendly staff. We pitched up at 11.30pm on a Sunday after a gig and they were excellent. Love it”
