About Bar 44 Cardiff

A Spanish tapas bar in Cardiff, Bar 44 Cardiff fills a former canal warehouse at 15-23 Westgate St, close to the Principality Stadium. It opened in 2015 and is the largest of the Bar 44 bars, split into four subterranean rooms with arched brick ceilings. The tapas menu runs from Jamon Iberico croquetas and Manchego with honey to a potato tortilla, and it includes vegetarian choices. The drinks list is a sherry and wine selection alongside beers beyond the usual. A lunch deal runs through the day, and an early-evening deal pairs three tapas with a drink. The bar is open daily, and walk-ins are seated at stools near the bar. Family run and independent, it is the sister restaurant of Asador 44.

Customer Review Summary

The tortilla is the dish reviewers name most, described as runny and gooey, with one diner placing it among the best they have had in Spain or the U.K. Close behind are the chicken, called soft and tender by one and singled out as roast chicken by another, and the jamon Iberico croquetas. Others name manchego with honey, bread with tomato, market fish, meatballs, chorizo, squid and pork belly. Diners also mention a lunch deal of three tapas and a drink as good value, wines and sherry that staff could talk through, and a good range of vegetarian options. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and attentive. The one criticism comes from a single reviewer, who says the room gets very noisy and could use some sound proofing. Walk-in groups describe getting a table without booking, including a party of four and a couple the manager at the door seated at the stools near the bar.

“We've lost count of the number of times we've eaten here, and there's a reason why we keep coming back! Amazing food, great service, warm friendly atmosphere. The menu always has something new and interesting each time we visit. Great wines and amazing sherry options. I want the recipe for the roast chicken and jamon Iberico croquets, although I doubt I could do them justice at home... Delicious, as always. No photos, sorry, we were too keen to get started! ☺️”
  • Andy Hoare
“A lovely tapas restaurant with a reasonable choice of beers, not the usual run of the mill stuff. But the real reason for going was the excellent Tapas, good range of veggie options. Staff were helpful and attentive.”

Good to know

“The success and recognition of the first two Bar 44's led to the opening of Bar 44 Cardiff in 2015. The largest of all the Bars can be found in the shadow of the Principality Stadium on Westgate Street. A former canal warehouse, the Bar is split up into four separate subterranean rooms with arched brick ceilings which serve to enhance the buzzing atmosphere which is central to all great tapas bars. Equal consideration is given to food and drink at Bar 44 - superb food and a huge drinks selection with something for everyone! A family run, independent business.”
