Customer Review Summary

Dessert is the draw reviewers raise most, called fantastic and impressive, including a birthday profiterole brought by a server. Close behind are the breakfast plates, with Eggs Royale and a full English both described as perfectly cooked, and a chicken with tartar sauce that one diner found really good. Several also praise the decoration and attentive waiters, and one regular of the London Ivy finds the Cambridge room friendlier and free of loud music. The food draws the sharpest complaints. One diner found wilted rocket in a salad and was later told the dish was correctly presented to specification. Another called the lobster spaghetti just noodles with ketchup sauce, and a steak was described as fatty. A few found the portions small, the food merely ok, or the greeting at the door unwelcoming, with one noting an eye roll. Others mention repeated drink upselling, tiny tables and uncomfortable chairs. One birthday diner still left with a celebratory croissant to take home.

“We had a reservation and were seated right away. The tables were very small making it awkward having the large menus along with water and wine glasses. The chairs were also very uncomfortable. We didn't particularly care for the server who waited on us, the young South Asian gentleman. Lacked personality and made a very rude remark about us ordering multiple starters. He also touched my back at one point where my guest visibly noticed it. I was not comfortable with that. He also didn't have any clue really about the wine selections. I'm not sure if this is supposed to be a posh place or if they are moonlighting as one, but you should be somewhat knowledgeable about the wines if you have a whole menu book dedicated to it. Otherwise, he was very quick to top off the wines and clear plates. The starters were quite good. No complaints there. Very interesting choices on the menu. Questionable presentation. Bread was less than average. The main dishes served were good and bad. All of the meat cuts were phenomenal. A little undercooked, but what was okay with me as I expected it to be overcooked in most places. The lobster spaghetti or whatever it's called was horrid. It was just noodles with ketchup sauce. The table was extremely disappointed in it for the price that was paid. Dessert was fantastic, no issues there.”

“I appreciate that standards can vary slightly from one branch to another, but the Cambridge location was well below what I would expect from The Ivy. The quality of the food was so poor that I genuinely found myself wondering what was going on in the kitchen. I’ve visited a number of Ivy restaurants over the years and had generally enjoyed them, but sadly, my experience in Cambridge was enough to put me off the brand altogether. A real disappointment.”

“I have never actually eaten at The Ivy Cambridge, so I cannot comment on the food or service. My experience of the place is purely visual, from walking past it on Trinity Street. It certainly knows how to create an entrance. The deep green frontage, polished details and slightly theatrical styling stand out against the historic Cambridge surroundings without looking completely out of place. On this particular day, a bright green Lamborghini happened to be parked directly outside, almost perfectly matching the colour of the restaurant. For a few seconds the whole scene looked ridiculously coordinated, as though someone had art-directed it for a photograph.”

“We chose The Ivy Cambridge because we had previously had good experiences at The Ivy in other locations, and an Amex offer gave us another reason to visit for my sister-in-law’s birthday. Unfortunately, this visit did not meet the standard we had experienced elsewhere. Soon after sitting down, we were asked for our drinks order before we had looked at the drinks menu, so we ordered still water. Before the first bottle had even been fully served, we were asked if we wanted another. These were minor issues, but the repeated upselling made the service feel rushed. Our main concern was the food. The salad contained ingredients that appeared dry and not particularly fresh, including wilted rocket, and the presentation was disappointing. I asked a member of staff about one ingredient simply because I genuinely could not identify what it was. I was told it was red cabbage, but I later confirmed that it was not. I was not asking for the dish to be replaced. I later contacted The Ivy and was told that the dish had been “correctly presented to specification” and that it could have been replaced. However, replacement was not the issue. My concern was the quality and apparent freshness of the ingredients. Meeting an internal specification does not necessarily mean that the food meets the standard a customer reasonably expects. Based on our previous experiences with The Ivy, this visit was disappointing by the way very good still water.”

“I’ve been to London Ivy many times and this is my first time in Cambridge branch. I felt that I was looked after much better here than in London. The staff members were friendlier, we got better service overall and the atmosphere is better in the sense that there’s no loud music across the whole restaurant like in London. Overall very good first experience and I can see myself coming back. Food is standard across all Ivy, you always know what you’re gonna get. Thank you team!”
