About Bread & Meat
On Bene't St in Cambridge, Bread & Meat is a restaurant set in a tiled room styled like a butcher's shop, with an open kitchen. The porchetta comes as a sandwich on ciabatta or as a bowl, with crispy crackling on the pork. The bowl adds slaw, roast vegetables, green salad, salsa verde and potatoes, so it works as a full plate rather than a filling alone. The Philly cheese steak follows the same format and is served as a sandwich, a bowl or poutine. A soy chicken ciabatta gives the short menu a third main. Seating is snug, and the doors are open daily.

Customer Review Summary
Porchetta is the item reviewers return to most, described as juicy, well seasoned and a big portion, with lovely crackling and a refreshing green sauce for the crispy pork. The Philly cheese steak comes close behind, praised as a filling sandwich, as poutine and as a bowl, with one reviewer recommending jalapeños alongside it. A soy chicken ciabatta also earns praise for its rich, succulent chicken and its sauce. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and welcoming, even when it was really busy. The caveats are cost and heft. One diner found a porchetta bowl very expensive for a casual spot, with a dry, chewy outside on the pork and under-seasoned vegetables. Another found the sandwiches too greasy and heavy and would share one next time. Seating is described as snug, and peak times as crowded and noisy. One reviewer singles out the garlicky coleslaw in the cheese steak bowl, and another still thinks about a beef fillet special with blue cheese sauce and mushrooms.

“Generally tasty food and friendly service, but very expensive for what is a casual food outlet. I ordered the porchetta bowl which came with crispy roast pork and crackling, a slaw, roast vegetables, green salad, salsa verde sauce, and potatoes. The crackling was crispy, and most of the pork was nice. However, the outside of the pork was very dry and chewy and the vegetables were under-seasoned. The service staff were generally friendly and efficient. The price, however, is outrageous for what you get. Including the 12.5% service charge, this bowl was over £21. For that price point at a casual eatery, I think the food should be perfect. Sadly, they did not deliver on this occasion.”

“I really enjoyed the sandwiches here, they were packed with flavour and really satisfying. That said, I found them a bit too greasy for my taste and a whole sandwich felt quite heavy. Next time I’d probably share one between two people. The staff were lovely and really welcoming, which made the experience even better. I’d definitely come back!”

“Stopped by Bread & Meat (it is walking distance from the City Centre) and had the Porchetta Sandwich – it was seriously delicious. The pork was juicy with a nice crunch on the outside, full of flavour, and cooked perfectly. Sandwich was a nice size and very filling. Everything tasted really fresh and is prepared in an open kitchen. Friendly service, great food, and definitely somewhere I'll be coming back to next time I'm in Cambridge. Highly recommend!”

“bread and meat is one of the best if not the best sandwich i’ve had. all of them are good, my personal favorite is the porchetta and they had a special of beef fillet with blue cheese sauce and mushrooms one of the times i went and i still think about that sandwich. I always take my friends when they come visit from abroad.”

“Such a beautiful little cafe. Food: Food came out quickly and warm, was extremely good, probably one of the best sandwiches (Philly cheese steak) I have had in a very long time and was very filling. Service: the waiter was very kind and cheery which is always lovely to see and got us everything we needed so thank you! Atmosphere: the place is very rustic aesthetic, great place for a date. Me and my partner loved it here, definitely recommend!”
