About Royal Papworth Restaurant

Royal Papworth Restaurant is a cafe on Francis Crick Ave in Cambridge, serving hot and cold food from a counter with a separate till for paying. Paninis feature alongside gluten-free options, and coffee is available for those stopping in. A vending machine outside offers microwave meals, with a microwave provided for reheating. Seating is available both inside and outside by the lake, giving visitors the choice of outdoor dining when the weather allows. The step-free, wheelchair-accessible entrance makes the space workable for visitors with mobility needs. It opens daily on a walk-in basis, with no need to book ahead, though lunchtime around midday to 1pm tends to get busy. The setup suits a quick meal or a coffee break between other visits.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often praise the hot meals and the wide selection of hot and cold food, with several calling the food fresh and tasty and one describing it as basic but really tasty. Paninis and coffee come up too, and one gluten free diner says something suitable was always available. The bright, airy eating area gets mentioned repeatedly, with plenty of seating inside and outside by the lake, and staff at the food counter are described as polite and friendly. The complaints are about the till and the vending machines. One reviewer says service at the till is neither efficient nor friendly, and that a hot meal often ends up lukewarm by the time it is paid for. Another reports stale bread, soup served with baguette pieces charged separately, a microwave meal from the vending machine whose bar code would not scan, no cutlery, and a vending machine coffee of about an inch. One reviewer says staff told them to leave a review when they complained. A few note lunchtime can be busy.

“Super setting well laid out good quality food. Reasonably priced. Well worth a visit.”
  • Ivan Pastore
“The price of the food is very expensive. Small pieces of baguette served with soup costs 0.65p each! The bread is stale too. Complained to the staff but they were unhelpful and told me to leave a review. If you visit the vending machine outside the restaurant, you can get a microwave meal that you can then use in the allocated microwave. However, the bar code doesn’t scan and therefore you can’t heat your meal. No cutlery available for this vending machines either. Ordered a number of different coffees from the vending machine and all you get is an inch of coffee for £1.80! What a complete rip off!!”

“Lovely place to eat. Good selection of hot and cold food. We arrived between lunch and dinner time, so we only had paninis, but they were putting out some beautiful looking and smelling food before we left. Had we known more hot food was coming out we would have waited 15 minutes.”
