About Kanto Cafe & Bakery

Kanto Cafe & Bakery is a Filipino cafe and bakery at 60 Cherry Hinton Rd in Cambridge, where the baking mixes traditional Filipino recipes with newer takes on them. Ube pandesal, ensaymada and ube cheesecake anchor the range, and the counter also carries a Korean garlic cheese bread. Matcha and ube drinks sit alongside the baking, so there is something to pair with a bun. The space inside is small with limited seating, and a queue is common. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often name the pandesal, especially the ube pandesal, which one calls soft and not too sweet and another loved. A Filipino diner found the plain pandesal sweet but missing lightness. Close behind are the ube cheesecake, described as creamy with a subtle ube flavour, and the shio pan, praised for its butter taste and sea salt on top. Ensaymada, Korean garlic cheese bread and a kalamansi cinnamon bun also get mentions, along with unusual drinks like the ube cloud and hojicha latte. Matcha divides opinion: one reviewer calls it the best they can find in Cambridge, while others found it very milky, with the matcha barely noticeable. Many describe the space as small with limited seating, and weekend queues can run long. One felt the coffee and matcha were ordinary and too expensive for the quality. One visitor arrived on a holiday to find the pastries and cheesecake sold out and settled for two matcha drinks.

“Amazing and unique pastries at a good price. I had a hojicha latte and this was also lovely. Cafe itself feels very cozy although it is small so too many people already there to sit in. But well worth the visit!”

“5/5 for the baked goods and the service! The ube cheesecake was really lovely and not too sweet, creamy with a subtle ube flavour. The shio pan was DELICIOUS: great butter taste coming through, and the sea salt on top really takes it up a notch. A bit disappointed by the matcha though, it was very milky, the matcha itself was barely noticeable. The staff was very welcoming and warm though!!”

“The BEST matcha that I can find in Cambridge. The bun and Shio-pan taste so good. After going there 3 times, my favorite one is Garlic Cream Cheese Bun! They worth the price!”

“Came here for the first time; been looking up this place for a while. Would recommend it. The matcha drinks is tasty; and the Filipino bakeries were delicious - had ube pandasal and loved the taste”

“Our expectations weren’t fulfilled. We hope an amazing product due to the high demand the place has, but it wasn’t anything from the other world. Coffee was ok but quite normal, and matcha the same. Too expensive for the real quality What it is very disappointing is the small space they have.”
