About John Lewis Espresso Bar

Up on an upper floor of the John Lewis store on Downing Place, John Lewis Espresso Bar is a café with windows looking out over Cambridge's roofscape and company-history posters along the walls for customers to read. The menu runs from cakes to sandwiches, served with a side salad, and main meals, with wraps that include a chicken and a pumpkin version. Coffee arrives in porcelain cups, lattes poured with latte art in a tall narrow cup, and juices sit alongside them. Ordering happens at the counter, where a queue forms at busy times, and food is carried out to the table. No reservations are taken, so customers simply walk in, and the café opens daily. A step-free, wheelchair-accessible entrance means visitors with mobility needs can reach the room without steps.

Customer Review Summary

Coffee is what reviewers return to most, with a latte in a proper porcelain cup and latte art in a tall narrow cup singled out as smooth and mellow. Close behind are the cakes and the view over Cambridge's rooftops from a bright space that several call quiet and relaxing. Food earns mixed notes. A chicken wrap with avocado, yoghurt sauce and fresh dill and a pumpkin wrap with soup and a bun drew praise, and the scones arrived hot and freshly baked. The baked goods are less consistent: one reviewer found the cinnamon bun soggy, another described the millionaire shortbreads as flat and smashed and the rocky road as too sickly. A coeliac reviewer found few choices and left with only a coffee. Recurring drawbacks are queues at a busy counter and a loud room at times, and one reviewer was disappointed when a cashier forgot to scan a card and dismissed the mention. Most describe the staff as friendly and helpful, and one notes a microwave available for heating food.

“John Lewis Cafe I know. Everything is just mass production. It's not going to be wow or disappointed. But still, the benefit of mass production is everything is cheaper. Not everyone can afford eating in luxury places but still deserves comfort treats in their life. The menu is quite narrow, looking around other tables. The food looked alright for the reasonable price. The scones were freshly baked. They were still hot when delivered. There is an microwave oven available for customers to heat their food manually. The place is clean, quiet and tidy. The service was always good whenever we went to this cafe. The main problem is, be ready to be on the queue. While the staff are not slow at all. It's a popular and busy place is why.”

“The food was acceptable and the millionaire shortbreads were flat and smashed! It looks like someone took a bat to it! The rocky road was too sickly but filled with marshmallows! The coffee was as expected for this establishment.”

“Lovely place to have a bite to eat . I’ve marked it down a point as a coeliac there are limited choices for me . I ended up having a coffee and not a lot else . The food on offer looked delicious though. I couldn’t fault the staff who kept the place clean and tidy .”
