About Maggie Mae's Brighton

Maggie Mae's Brighton is a bar in Brighton on Preston St, which opened in December 2014. Live tribute acts, from Elvis to Dolly Parton, form the core of the entertainment, and a DJ plays music for dancing between them. The themed nights include an 80s night, a 1D night and line dancing led by a dance teacher, so the programme covers several decades of pop. Hen and stag parties are part of the mix of groups who come in. Some party nights are ticketed, with tickets bought in advance. The toilets are downstairs, reached by stairs on the far side of the dance floor.

Customer Review Summary

Music and entertainment draw the most praise, with reviewers singling out a good DJ, an 80s night with fantastic tunes all night, a One Direction night where guests danced and sang for hours, an Adele tribute act, and a beginners' line dancing session that one first-timer found simple and fun. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly and welcoming, drinks are called very nice, and one group of middle aged women felt at home among hen and stag parties. The recurring complaint is heat. Several say the venue needs air conditioning, and one reports it was not working and had to be asked for twice before it was switched on. Others find the small venue cramped, with toilets downstairs or across the dance floor, and one found an 80s night sparsely attended with a narrow song selection. One reviewer suggests booking a table. Another describes doormen ushering everyone out at 12.20 on a night with a 1am closing time.

“We didn't eat, but the place was jumping, staff were friendly and we 'middle aged women' didn't feel out of place, varied age range, a stag and two hens. Quiet it is not! Good DJ and music, great atmosphere. Book a table if you can, it's rammed and pretty small. We'll be back 😁”

“The toilets were downstairs, which was a bit inconvenient as it involved a long walk down and quite a few stairs. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. I was disappointed that the air conditioning wasn't working was to hot and had to ask twice before it was eventually turned on. The drinks were very nice and reasonably priced at 2 for £16. The venue hosted an 80s party, but unfortunately there weren't many people there. The music selection was also a little disappointing for an 80s night. A wider variety of 80s hits songs would have made the atmosphere much better. Overall, the staff and drinks were great, but there are a few areas that could be improved. Turn air con on....”

“Everyone dancing and having a good time when management decide to close, doormen literally herded everyone out of the door in 2 minutes! It was 12.20, closing time 1am. When I questioned a doorman he said don't the staff deserve to go home early? NO!”

“This bar was great, music atmosphere and service. the only thing is they need to invest in some air-conditioning the place was way too hot, id hate to think what its like in the height of summer, not only for the customers but for the staff too. Other than that 10/10”

“First time line dancing, two left feet but such fun! Didn’t know what to expect but Cindy the dance teacher kept it simple & fun for all us beginners. Only slight negative is we felt very cramped as it’s a small venue for so many people and I tripped on someone’s feet at one point :-( I also got a verbal from one woman who needed more space & told me to move!! The cheek of it! So I went to the front near the stage and joined the hen party! Learnt basic steps & was a couple of hours dancing. Great fun.”
