About Sally Lunn’s Historic Eating House & Museum

Sally Lunn's Historic Eating House & Museum occupies a building on North Parade Passage that ranks among the oldest houses in Bath, dating to around 1483, with low ceilings and creaking floorboards throughout. A small museum sits in the basement, open alongside the tearoom. The kitchen centres on the Sally Lunn bun itself, served sweet or savoury with toppings such as lemon curd, chocolate, or egg mayo and brie with cranberry, and the menu also lists trencher dishes in chicken, beef and mushroom, and pork versions. House blend tea is poured by the pot, and a Jane Austen afternoon tea is served on the bath buns. A takeaway bakery counter offers the buns to go. Reservations are recommended given the demand, and a wait can occur even with a booking. A private dining room accommodates groups, and high chairs are available for families with young children. The 53-item menu covers breakfast through lunch service daily.

Customer Review Summary

The Sally Lunn Bun anchors nearly every visit, whether topped with lemon curd, salmon, or chocolate butter, and reviewers repeatedly describe it as soft, rich, and almost brioche-like. Close behind is the trencher, ordered as chicken or beef and mushroom, alongside the Jane Austen afternoon tea, which most who tried it called a fun, unique treat, though one reviewer felt the savoury toppings, like egg mayo and brie and cranberry, were mediocre and haphazardly assembled on too much bread. The setting draws consistent comment, with the centuries-old building, low ceilings, and basement museum adding what many call a special, history-steeped touch, and staff are described again and again as friendly and attentive. A recurring trade-off is the wait, even with reservations, and a couple of reviewers found the menu restrictive or the trencher stew overly spiced with little meat flavor, plus one noted containers left leaning in a stairway. Several mention booking ahead given the popularity, and one described a duck refusing to leave after being fed bread from the table.

“Me and my husband had an afternoon tea at this lovely establishment, and ended up trying a bun. Which was beautiful but not as lovely as our waitress Phoebe. She was very respectful even though we took a long time to order. I would highly recommend and would 100% go again.”

“Wonderful place to visit, combining history with great food and beautiful vintage decorations. The menu is fairly limited as it centered around their traditional recipe of buns, but the food is delicious and very special, and beautifully presented.”
  • Jazz M
“We had the breakfast bun and it was sooo good. The bun was almost like garlic bread and all ingredients on it were lovely. We are already planning when we will be back during this trip to try a sweet bun. The only thing I will say is the americano was very weak”

“A truly exceptional and historic spot that's definitely worth a visit. I got the Light Lunch and it was enough for a late lunch/dinner, the Welsh Rarebit Special was delicious and the soup of the day was a comforting tomato and basil, also the pot of house tea was splendid. The staff was friendly and attentive, i went alone and had a fantastic time. I do recommend making a reservation, the place is quite popular (totally earned) but they have so many tables so the wait time is not atrocious but better safe than sorry, you dont want to miss this one.”
  • Vasi Danbury
“We absolutely loved having dinner here. It is one of the oldest establishments in Bath. The food is very generous and so tasty. We had the chicken trencher and the beef and mushroom one as well. Then we had dessert, custard pie with lemon curd. The staff were fantastic and friendly. Our night was perfect. Highly recommend, but make sure you book so you don't miss out.”
